IDE to USB converters suddenly 10x more useful

One of the HEXUS.community admins recently moved over to AM2, only to discover that there are changes taking place in southbridge-attached components on new motherboards. Gone are the days of four channels of IDE goodness; good news for making space on motherboards, but bad news for the techies with a dozen spare IDE drives. Still, the intrepid forum admin fixed the problem by spending a whole ten pounds on an IDE-USB converter.

Only the one IDE channel? I only bought my first SATA drive a few weeks ago!

Presumably this works equally well with optical drives? (Where the bandwidth limitation shouldn't really affect them.)

But how much does an IDE controller card cost these days? And that would be full ATA133 performance. Though modern boards couple their lack of IDE connectors with a lack of legacy PCI connectors, & I don't think anybody is gonna be making many PCI-X ATA controllers!

I picked up two internal ATA -> SATA converter cards that draw power from floppy connectors, they've come in handy a few times.

Yup, I got mine with two SoA builds using variations of the NF7 from Abit

Am I being cynical here or is this a stealthy advert for Scan?

The IDE->SATA convertors are very good, had the effect of speeding up the disk too Don't know whether it was the fact it had more bandwidth to play with...probably all in my head........problem with these is that they required a floppy disc power connector....of which my PSU had one!

May Scan have a lot of these in stock and they're trying to clear it down

You are being Cynical - I happened to get it from Scan but was so chuffed with it I felt it warrented a post

I know I could have got a seperate ATA controller card , but this effectivly turns any drive that I've got into a portable one for under £10

Did I mention that its hotswappable ? You just power the unit off , change drives and switch it back on again ( windows just detects the new drive on the fly as normal )

When are we going to see SATA optical drives. It would be good to get rid of the IDE cables altogehter if there is going to be little motherboard support for IDE

yeah would have thought that SATA to IDE converters are more useful than USB 2.0, which may also require the drive to be exposed? (ruined one old drive this way due to static). The converter funkstar mentioned was good but is there one (or does that one) plug in to an old ATA drive but then allow a SATA cable to be plugged into it and the mobo?

thats what that one does. it's a basic ATA -> SATA adapter. should work on just about any device i think. I've not tried this one on any optical drives, but my other one i have works fine with my Pioneer DVDR and Plextor CDR
