Whats the best phone coming Q4 2007?

    Hey,

I've had a look at a few of them, because fortunately my contract expires around then, so I should be able to get a new handset free or cheaply by upgrading. There's obviously the iPhone, but I personally think that's more marketing than substance - but then again, without having seen one I can't judge. I've got a touchscreen phone atm (xda mini s) and whilst its great Windows Mobile on a 200mhz processor is very slow. So definately looking for something more functional than quirky.

And from what I've seen at demos the W960i seems to be looking to be a great phone. Whilst I don't listen to music that much, it seems much better / faster than it's brother, the K850i (unless theyre from different generations, but seems a bit odd being released near enough the same time).

Always been a bit underwhelmed with nokias since the N70, and these days siemens dont get a look in. Samsungs are ok, but the os always seems a bit more limited. So,what is the best phone coming this year? Or, that has already come. But seeing as its likely I'll be tied into an 18 month contract, I want something new so it's only an 18 month old phone when my contract matures rather than a 24 / 30 month old one.

Now that apple have rendered the iPhone totally undesirable by giving it to 02, the htctouch looks like a winner to me..I want one

Only problem is the lack of 3G support, but maybe that will come in time

There's probably quite a few phones that haven't even been announced yet that will be out in Q4. Watch this space.

There is the Samsung U700 at the min. 6 Buttons on the front are touch sensetive and the dial can be used for navigation on the menus. It also has full 3G capabilities for video calling and video streaming. You get all the cables and sofware in the box so it is good to go, only downside is that it doesn't have a memory card in the box, mind you the Micro SD cards are quite cheap as of late. Another downside coming to think of it is that there isn't any software or drivers available for the Samsungs for Vista at present but they will be working on it.

Samsung also have a new model due in the next month or so I beleive, full touch screen capabilities and 3G is all I know about it so far.

As for the iPhone, it is due out over here December this year on O2 primarily. We should be getting it shortly afterwards.

Sony Ericsson have 5 new handsets due out between now and Christmas but once again I have no other info on them at present.

Reason why the Nokias are running slow on the N series at the min is that the Symbian OS is slowing them down. That is literally it, yeah it is great on the phones and works well but there is no way that I know of that will speed them up.

It literally comes down to personal preference. What you use the phone for etc. If you are wanting media on the move I would personally go for a Sony Ericsson or possibly the new Motorola Z8. Never been a big fan of the Moto phones but the new Z8 is fantastic. Few teething problems on the first batch 2 weeks ago but it has been sorted already. N95 is a decent phone with so many different functions most people wouldn't use them all, either way it is stable now and has a decent sized screen for media and also Satnav.

At the min I have a Samsung D840, really good handset but the battery life can be quite short if you give it some hammer and it doesn't have 3G. I also have a Sony Ericsson W880i, comes with 1Gb M2 memory card and is great for media. You can pull movies off a DVD and convert them to MP4 and the phone will play them no worries, ideal for me as it takes around hour and a half to get to work!

Bit of info here on some new handsets including the new Samsung I mentioned :

    Nokia 6267

The problem with many Nokia phones is that they are smartphones. This gets you loads of features, and the possibility to run third party apps like sat Nav, but at the expense of start-up time and interactive performance. The phone ends up as a general purpose computer trying to juggle loads of tasks, rather than a unified device. If you want performance and ease of use over features, you would be better off looking at a non smart phone.

I work for Nokia, and recently we have been using a fair few 6267 phones as part of another (still secret) project, It is quite a nice phone (assuming you like flip phones). It has two screens, music player, removable memory cards (up to 4 Gb), 2 Mpix camera and 3G with video calling, all in a fairly small size, much smaller than any smartphone.

    Press release. More product photos

According to the press release it will be about €240 SIM free and out in Q4, which will work out at around £170, or free with a £25/month contract.

The W960i looks a nice phone but I'm disappointed that
    1. there is no HSDPA, as both of the other new SEMs have it (the K850i and the W910i) and
    2. there is no photo light, although I could probably live without that, but the light on my current W850i has come in handy at times (and thats not when it should be used for taking pictures)

Personally I'd prefer one of these as I mentioned in another post below!:

    http://www.coolsmartphone.com/article727.html

I did want the the Trinity which is out now (the Orange M700 is one) with built in GPS and 3G, but I'd prefer the keyboard with the Kaiser when it comes out - its almost the same form factor with a keyboard, 3.5G and tilting screen

The Touch is a bit gimmicky for my taste as its just a reskin of base Windows Mobile with not a lot else going for it functionality-wise. Like the small size though

Nope, for Q4, gotta be the Kaiser for my vote.

Its muti-touch - which is the important thing, not just plain old touch screen (which has been around for years..nokia had a touch screen phone out in hong-kong over 5 years ago), and its multi-touch that attracts me to the iPhone over anything else.

I'm also very interesting in the HTC Kaiser.. GPS, Wifi, bluetooh, 3G, keyboard, touch screen yadda yadda - a throughly modern phone. The iPhone will push UI for phones forwards but it's retarding in the tech department and as someone who's owned touch-screen devices for many years I can tell you for certain that there's no substitute for a proper keypad. The only time i've found touch a benefit is for sat nav for the car - something the iPhone can't do. Even then it's greasy screen time I'm not sold on multi-touch being that relevant for most phone operations - most of the time it's a single choice click unless you're typing in which case i'd rather have a proper keyboard (or a thumboard). +1 to apple for the slick UI, -10 to apple for crippling the phone with years old tech and no hard keys.

Hmm. The Touch isn't actually multitouch though - it just detects the difference between a fat-finger and a stylus touch (I think that's just a driver tweak rather than actual hardware in the screen too from something I read on XDADevelopers), with the finger options very limited - sliding up, down, left, right to do things like bring up specific views and scroll through lists.

I didn't think that the iPhone was a proper multitouch implementation either? Similar stuff to the Touch plus some better photo manipulation stuff (zooming iirc?). I didn't think any of the core interface stuff used any multitouch?

Roll on the day when we all have a Jeff Han screen in our pockets.
