Flashing MDA Vario III / Kaiser / TyTN II

Hey guys.

Even though this is supposed to be an all singing and all dancing phone , I've found it can be a bit sluggish. Even with the background apps all closed. I've heard that people on xda-devs have reflashed it and found it much faster - the way HTC designed it to be - but I'm slightly concerned about bricking my device. Apparently it's fairly straightforward though.

But for an absolute noob, who doesn't know anything, if anyone has done it can they give me a step by step process? What's CID locking, does the Vario III have it, how do you remove it, what are good roms to flash onto it, does it need a new radio rom, what the hell is a radio rom? How do you flash, what programs can you use to do so, how do you backup contacts (well mine are stored in outlook so I should be ok... right?)

My understanding is that the CID lock stops you installing a custom ROM, this bit of software

resets the CID lock and allows ROM installs, this will delete everything on the phone, inclusing calls, SMS, apps, etc. I went for one of the duty touchflow roms, very happy with it. Its worth noting that t-mobile roms are pretty fluff free, so you wont see a hudge speed increase. ALso the Kaiser has shed loads of RAM, so leaving apps open and switching between them speeds things up. One quick and easy test is how fast does the screen dwicth between portrait and landscape, it should be around 2 seconds to complete. Ans thats with a lot of stuff onboard and a complicated home screen.

I flashing mine from orange got the issue with sim being locked but after unlocking it its fine. Only issue now is its reallllllly slow at time, especially when it cant connect tot he net.

Does anyone know what the latest rom version is?

Community cooked roms are certainly better than any carrier rom, usually for speed and certainly for getting the balance of features you want. But do be aware that you are probably invalidating your warranty by doing so and you might not be able to restore the phone to it's original state. Some steps can be irreversible (this is the case for radio roms on the Tytn, not sure about your device). Also, get it wrong and you can brick your phone. I would not consider flashing without spending a decent amount of time on xda-devs reading up about it. They are a bit mean-spirited to naive questions sometimes, but if you read first you'll get sensible assistance and you'll ensure you don't make any mistakes.

Yeah, great guide and app. A note though, if you sync your contacts with outlook (or whatever) don't bother backing up and restoring them using this. ActiveSync will then gt confused and dulicate your contacts and any birthdays or aniversaries in your calendar linked to them.

Yeah, I've had that, really really annoying. I just use it for backing up my SMS as MrP suggests.
