Explain how the "new" iPhone has 3g and yet last year when the original oPhone came out 3g wasnt a massive issue, people didnt really need it and it used too much battery life..

Anyone would think that Job's was just takign advantage of those mac fanboi idiots that'll buy anything with a bloody mac logo on

    Re: The New iPhone

I would imagine that they have got more battery friendly chips now. Not to mention had time to tweak things so that battery life will be similar to the 1g ones. Who knows.

Even the biggest iPhone haters have to admit it's changed the phone landscape forever.

    Re: The New iPhone

The technology moved on to make it possible. Personally I think you were ripped off if you went for the non-3g one. I waited until this iteration appeared as I just can't see how internet browsing etc can be viable on EDGE or GPRS.

    Re: The New iPhone

I don't understand why so many people get suckered in to Apples products there nothing special at all and are very over priced.

I suppose it shows what good marketing does for products.

    Re: The New iPhone

It was perfectly possible before - other phone manus managed to do 3g with reasonable battery life - it just that Apple weren't ready.

    Re: The New iPhone

I'm not sure if was a case of not being ready maybe more a case of the marketing department cottoning on to the fact the everyone would buy the iPhone not matter what, and then buy the 3g version as well.

I’m waiting for them to release the one with a decent camera, no doubt around Christmas.

As for it having changed the mobile phone landscape forever, I don’t really see it, the touch screen is the only new feature it has over any thing else (and I'm pretty sure the LG Prada did it earlier) while a great gimmick isn’t that practical for every day use, the mp3 player is sub-standard (as with all iPods) and the camera is terrible.

I would defiantly say that it has changed mobile phone marketing for ever as it has proven that as long as the marketing is good you can get sensible people to shell out well over the odds for a sub-standard product on an extortionate tariff.................... twice!

    Re: The New iPhone

Their UI changed the market - the hardware was a bit 'meh'. Can it record video and allow me to change the battery on the move yet? Weird voids in the design those (considering the competition pretty much ALL do it).

Touch i've had for years - and multi-touch makes no odds to me.

Remember that phones are all about fashion - and Apple do style so very well.

The thing is style is the only thing they do well, the UI is all about the flash really isnt that much of a leap from what was there before.

If I' having to spend in excess of £500 for a phone I really want it to do everything I expect of it, like have 3G as standard, have a decent camera, upgradable memory, a physical structure that dosnt crack after a few weeks of use, you know the basics

I think that's a little unfair - the UI demonstrated you could make finger friendly slick interfaces whilst everybody else relied on a stylus. It's had an effect - everybody is mimicking it now. Apple have some good ideas like anybody else.
Windows Mobile 7 will be quite different to 6.1 - cause and effect.

    Re: The New iPhone

Its not really that revolutionary though its just the natural progression of wht was already there, everyone was working on it, Apple just happend to be the first to get it to market.

Maybe Im weird but I dont really want a touch screen, I like tactile feedback, having a button to press makes things so much more satisfying.

And I dont think its that unfair, all apple products have form over function, the ipod shuffle was a master stroke of marketing they some how couldnt make a reasonably proced ipod with a screen so left it out and made that the selling point.

    Re: The New iPhone

I've had my iPhone for a week now and can offer some feedback. I have never owned an Apple product before and was very reluctant to get an iPhone. However I thought to myself that I simply wanted to see what all the fuss was about so I've given it a try.

My main requirments were to have a mobile phone, MP3 player, PMP, Web Browser and Push email client all in one.

The device I used before this was a Blackberry Curve and before that was a SonyEricsson p990. The BB was a fantastic device albeit with a small screen and the p990 was simply awful. The iPhone seems to tick all the right boxes for what I need.

After 5 days of use I think the device itself is very good although a bit basic in terms of functionality. A Fisher Price Mobile is to be the monicker that I have attached to the device. But essentially my gripes with the device are all software based and can therefore (and hopefully) be fixed with updates. Things that I've noticed that are missing in a nutshell are

    • copy & paste
    • mark several emails as read at once
    • set the phone to turn on and turn off at set times
    • setting music files as ringtones
    • voice dialing

The hardware is great, a nice big and bright screen, the touch controls work excellently, the accelerometer is great when switching between portrate and landscape. GPS is a nce touch but havent used it yet, I havent used the camera either but I guess why would I, I have a proper camera at home.

My biggest gripe with buying into the whole Apple thing so far is iTunes. All my music to date is ripped as WMA files (via Media Player) and a simple Windows Explorer directory structure which is replicated on my MP3 player means that all my music is stored how I want it. When iTunes got ahold of my music collection and tries to copy it over it made a real hash of it all. It treats albums with more that one artist as separate albums and even entering in 'album artist' details doesn't help iTunes in putting the correct albums together. Also, it keeps failing to get the artwork from the servers for the album covers. I keep pointing iTunes to the album art that Windows Media Player seems to have no problem in downloading. Admittedly I've only been using iTunes for 5 days but I'm begining to miss Windows Media Player and Windows Explorer's simplicity in this regard.

I've got another week to decide whether to keep the device due to the 14 day cooling off period and I think I will. I was very tempted to wait for the Blackberry Thunder but have heard rumours that this phone will be a Vodafone only one. Vodafone doesn't work where I live.

    Re: The New iPhone

Unfortuantely, the OP is correct, the 3g iphone has been plagued by poor battery life. Firmware updates should resolve this somewhat however.

That being said, I love the iPhone, think its a brilliant piece of technology.

Not an Apple fan then Trig? You offend me by lumping me in with such a crowd!

For me the phone is great, the only problem being the battery life. It does all of what I ever wanted the WM phones that I have owned to do but so much better. However I can't see it being any good as a work phone. BB have got that one tied up.
