Iphone, Win Mobile or blackberry for business?

    Hi Guys

I'm not up to speed on the latest trends on the mobile front, was hoping you guys could give me some advice on what would be best for getting calender and push e-mail on the go, the business has a SBS 2003 server which uses exchange and would probably buy about 10 phones, any suggestions?

Re: Iphone, Win Mobile or blackberry for business?

I've implemented Windows Mobile at work as well as Nokia Mail For Exchange on E-Series business phones. Windows Mobile is effective so long as some effort's been spent on the user interface by whatever manufacturer you choose to go with - and HTC are probably the best. Non-touchscreen, go for the S740. Touchscreen, the Touch 3G ios good and reasonably priced, the Touch Pro 2 is incredible but pricey. The Touch HD can be had for free on some web'n'walk tariffs from T-Mobile and is well worth a look. MFE on older series Nokia phones (E71s, 61s etc) has a few weaknesses - it doesn't synch subfolders, for example. On the newer phones like the E75 it does. It's an effective device, and there are also variants of the MFE client available for N-series smartphones. MFE is a free download from http://www.nokiaforbusiness.com/ , so if you have an S60 based N or E series phone handy, it might be worth giving it a try.

Pricey but I'd echo nichomach's comments - I've got the Xperia X1, not yet found anything I can't do with it

Oh, and it is built by HTC for Sony Ericsson, so a good phone underneath too

Re: Iphone, Win Mobile or blackberry for business?

I would go with either BB or a Windows based phone on this front, don't get me wrong iPhone is a great piece of kit and looks the part to but the battery isn't to great having to be charged daily.

Re: Iphone, Win Mobile or blackberry for business?

What are your users like? Do they want something that is simple but not that flexible, then Blackberries every time.
Windows mobile devices are simply less reliable however they can do a hell of a lot more. They are also far cheaper to run as they only need a data tarrif rather than the overpriced blackberry tarrifs, CAL's for each device and a BES server.
Do you provide the IT support? If so, you have to consider the moaning users impact on you.

Re: Iphone, Win Mobile or blackberry for business?

Thanks for the replies guys, we do IT support so reliability is one of the key things we're looking for (i.e. no missing e-mail!), i'm not TOO worried about simplicity as the users respond well to training. I thought everyone would say iphone, shows how much I know!

I will try and find out more about the requirements, someone else was dealing with this until now.

Re: Iphone, Win Mobile or blackberry for business?

i work for orange on their 3rd line support desk so i deal mainly with blackberrys, windows mobile and customers multimedia/pc issues, i also have a HTC diamond which imho is the best HTC h/s ive ever had. Trouble with blackberrys is your not only dealing with the mobile network infrastructure but also the RIM relay system (how the blackberrys communicate with the BIS/BEZ servers and how the service books are sent out), often the communication between the 2 can be problematic especially as all data services, mms, mail, internet go over the blackberry APN, and if that has problems there is no way to switch to the mobile providers APN's as all blackberry services are controlled by service books sent to the h/s and every single one of these needs.....you guessed it, to go over the blackberry APN so if theres an issue there your blackberry is basicly a brick with a qwerty keypad . Also on top of that there are extra charges for using the blackberry data services. If your work has a BIS/BEZ server than blackberry might be the way to go, other than that i would def look at HTC since win mobile 6.1 is a very stable OS, theres lots of room to tweak the handsets and the pop/imap control is second to none, sync is a dodle and if all else fails you can allways use web based mail via the opera broswer/IE which isnt something you would be able to do on a blackberry due to the limitations of the broswer support (blackberrys are not smart phones!) as well as using the mobile providers standard APN's if one goes down you will allways have a back up, which again is in my opion more reliable.

Im not even gona get into iphones cos id need a rant twice as long as this one and i might get banned!

Re: Iphone, Win Mobile or blackberry for business?

honestly since the iphone isnt out for orange we only had a trial one to play with but a few of my mates who are into mac's and all that jazz have them, as a mobile phone their quality is still pretty shocking, sound quality mainly on calls isnt as good as it should be, their support for 3G is also pretty shakey. Running more than one App at a time can cause some problems with lock up and rebooting. There e-mail service is pretty spot on, and easy to set up - but i wouldnt say good email support makes up for all then other issues, especialy if you want it for buisness. If you want an ipod that makes calls then i guess its pretty cool, however id rather have a pc in my hands that does everything a pc does and does eveything a mobile does as well as a mobile does it.......lol

Re: Iphone, Win Mobile or blackberry for business?

iPhone, its the bimbo of the pack, it looks pretty, it moves pretty, but she can really only do one thing at once, and her idea of work, doesn't really align with the demands of most people who need to get things done. The notion that you spend that much on a phone, and have to warenty void jailbreak it to get functionality you expect as standard is just stupid. As for the build quality the GPS is easily a worst in class winner, call quality and signal strength sub par.

Windows Mobile, its ****ing anoying at times. She is the old secretary who can do most things, but she is a bit slow at times, and very set in her ways. Definately not eye candy. Its up to people like HTC to put her in a really nice dress. (and they do, the Touch HD is a stonkingly great business mobile phone). But at the end of the day they are a total swiss army knife, when on the virgin train last week the new wifi thing wasn't working, i had regretably only got my linux tablet with me (try getting that set up over USB to use any phone, without working internet already on the linux pc your trying to get the internet onto). Oh dear, no internet for me? Wrong, quick google on Pocket Opera and i'm downloading wmwifirouter, at what must of been 3.6mbits/second. Quick set up and i've turned my mobile phone into a wifihotspot using my HSDPA to let me have a very nice fast connection. It really is that "windows" effect that i was able to do this without dicking about, requiring nothing more than my mobile phone, that i had the whole thing done and dusted in about 3 minuites. I love that!

BB Storm, despite riding the 'short bus' as a child and been the ultimate retard of the pack, her parents play golf and are able to get her lots of opportunities as the infrastructure ingratiates itself so easily. The web browser is the worst by miles, the keypad is fricken annoying, but the battery life is definately a lot better than the iPhone thou.

I was using my colleagues Iphone and though I found it very smooth, and the screen was lovely, I also found it very annoying to switch and navigate from different applications, its a device for media more than anything, but the battery life means the amount of Videos and music you can listen to in one charge is very limited.

I myself use WinMo, yes it is annoying at times, but 6.5 is around the corner, and I’m sure they have ironed out the little annoying things, and made it smoother.

Thanks for that guys, I think its settled, probably the Touch HD for the clients.

Also my contract is up in June and the company will be looking to get 2 - 3 new phones for the Tech guys, would you still recommend the Touch HD for the IT geeks, we should have a good budget, well enough for the iphone anyway!

Have a look at the touch Diamond 2, it gets a free upgrade to WinMo 6.5 too. Theres a good review on youtbe comparing the Diamond 2 and the Touch HD from Pocketnow.

If you like the touch HD, there is the Diamond 2 would be a good alternative as well. Pretty much the same hardware, but HTC have said they will be issuing a WinMob 6.5 update for it.
