I am currently with tmobile and want to upgrade my phone to the touch HD 2. Tmobile say they won't have it for at least another month.
I can get it online now via a reseller on a t mobile contract for free(I only wanted to stay with tmobile because of their web and walk package).
If I went for the new contract via an online reseller, can I transfer my number from my old tmobile contract to my new one?

No you can't usually do it that way, moving a number from one line to another. Best bet would be just wait for the device on T-Mobile. Either that or get the PAC from T-Mobile but let them you know you are staying with them and explain about the device.
Isn't this the same as when CarphoneWarehouse offered me a P990i (back in the day) before O2 could do one? Same number still on O2, just the billing was going to be through CPW instead of O2. Ended up waiting for O2 upgrades to give me one as retentions offered me a much better deal if I stayed with them.
CPW would have needed my PAC code to do the transfer.
I spoke to T-mobile retentions today, and they said I wouldn't be able to keep my number. They also said that the phone I wanted(the touch HD2) would be £150 on upgrade. I can get a new contract online via another reseller(but on t-mobile's network) for £35 with the phone free. Looks like I'll be changing my number.

Sounds like T-mobile just being arsey - Virgin did the same for me fine.
If you're willing to wait - get your PAC, port to a different network on PAYG. Wait a week, get the PAC for that and port to your new account.

I know that Orange don't, it's all personal preference of the carrier I believe.
A friend of mine had to do exactly this. He wasn't happy. Especially as he had to top up the PAYG phone.
Mind you, he also tried 3 as a network which was a miserable failure. Then when he did get a contract phone, he decided he didn't like the phone. So he bought a Nokia 5800 and gave his previous phone to a charity auction.
Even though I'm with t mobile I agree they can be very silly at times. Anyhow Agents method is the way to go.
yeah I've had to do that in the past. Be warned though that you might get the odd issue with people sending you MMS messages if they are on the original network you were while you're on the new one - I had that when moving from T-Mobile to Orange, anyone who sent me an MMS who was on T-Mobile never got through as the T-Mobile system had my number logged as an "internal" one and so didn't send it out in the same way.
I've had to do that. its a pain but probably still the easiest way of doing it.
Glad I'm not the only one to have that problem - moved from Virgin to Orange, and a friend on T-Mobile couldn't MMS me, moved again from Orange to T-Mobile and it started working again.
TMobile said the same to me - that they can't transfer numbers between accounts on their own network. Utterly stupid..

Orange would only transfer the number if the new account was considered an "upgrade" over the old one.
I can only imagine it's some kind of attempt to stop people replacing their Orange contract direct from Orange with one through some online firm with a big discount...
Mind you, if people just quit and move to another network, that's not a brilliant tactic, so who knows.
