Whats the HTC Tattoo like ?

My contract is coming to an end, and I'm not sure which way I want to go at present. Currently with Orange, they say I can upgrade early (26th Jan) which would mean I'd be stuck with them untill sometime in 2012.

One of the phones I'm looking at is the HTC tattoo, looks quite smart, but I've never had a HTC before. I've always been a Nokia, Samsung or LG person.

That said if I take my PAC code (won't be till April) then I can go over to Vodafone and have the phone for free, pay them £25 a month for 24 months (If I'm going to do a 24 month deal I want a phone that I like and won't die on me) and I'll get 300 minutes (only 100 less than I get now) unlimited texts (got that on Orange) and I get 500 meg web browsing (something I don't get with Orange)

I went into the 02 shop and to be honest they seem the most pricey of the lot at the moment and I wasn't all that impressed with the phones they are offering at the moment.

I would say the Hero is the better & more stylish phone, but the Tattoo is still excellent, and certainly will afford you a cheaper monthly cost...

HTC phones in my experience are excellent, and the new breed of Android phones are a step ahead of anything else IMHO...

    low-res resistive screen

you should be able to get the HTC Magic free by now on vodafone - if you can do, only a crazy person would go for the tattoo over it, or on the off chance of a Hero then thats the one to go for obviously

The advantage of the Tattoo is HTC Sense UI, if you aren't fussed with that then I'd agree that the Magic is easily as good and has the capacitive screen. Depends whether you wanna be able to use the touchscreen with gloves as well I guess!

xda-devs can sort the sense UI issue out, as long as he's not scared of that kind of thing

if the gloves have any sort of thickness your not going to be able to jab at the tattoos tiny screen accurately anyways tbh, you cant go back to a resistive after a capacitive though, night and day

Cracking handset, but not worth that contract price. With a higher allowance or at £20/month it'd be more like it. The screen resolution is lower than the Hero and the Magic, which isn't so good for web browsing. However, the lower resolution screen does result in the phone flowing faster than either of the other two (which can both lag). It's also a far smaller handset. If you're not keen on the larger physical dimensions of the Hero then the Tattoo is definitely worth a look (I'd forget the Magic, unless you're offered a really good deal).

Just to give you an idea of how the prices on both stack up (note: I don't think any of those deals include Mobile Internet. It's an extra £5/month).
