Simple if it were me, I'd go for the Hero coz it's Android and infinitely configurable while still usable. I've a owned Hero and loved it, it was also one of the most highly rated phones of last year. The screen is just the right size, it fits well in palm of the hand, it's fast and it has Sense UI and a 2.1 Android update is on its way soon for the phone.
The only downside is that it will be replaced this month by the HTC Legend which is looking to be a truely great phone.
I love my hero, but yeah it may be worth waiting for the Legend. I'd go into a shop and have a good play with anything you are considering buying first.
I'm using a Touch2 atm and love it. Going to get a Desire or Legend on my next upgrade. Android handsets seem to be gaining momentum and run faster than the Windows Phones.
HTC seems to be churning phone out at the moment, i was trying to play it safe in getting a tried and tested model. The hunt goes on, many thaks for all your comments.

It seems the Legend has it, i just hope the reviews are great.

When you say Touch 2 do you mean Touch Pro 2 or Touch HD 2? The "Touch 2" is a different phone (technically the diamond) which I don't think is sold anymore.
anyway regardless, don't get the Hero it may well be a nice phone but its old now and due to be replaced very shortly. I would go for the HD2 as its a really nice phone, or if you want android wait for the legend or get the desire (similar phone, but with android rather than windows mobile).

desire is the phone to get atm. I love my hero but if I was getting a phone atm it would be the Desire in a heart beat.
Updated my post, its the desire thats the same as the HD2 not the legend..my mistake. Legend is actually slower with poorer specs in general..so on that basis the desire would be a much better alternative unless the solid aluminium body is important to you.
It's all so confusing, still reading up on the Desire. Reviews on the Legend are mixed.

Yet to see a bad review of the Legend. Some reviews say it's spec is lower than the Nexus or Desire and yes it is but it is a different proposition. It's meant to be cheaper, more compact and some would say more stylish than the Desire & Nexus. The fact that the Desire can be had for less than a Legend is throwing a right spanner in the works though. However I have played with a Legend & a Desire & own a Nexus One and believe me the Legend is not slow, even when compared to the Desire.
Just going by reviews see techrader's conclusion, I am not saying its a good phone, but still mixed reviews.
