Settings to configure Googlemail on Android 2.1 (Desire)

The HTC Desire is my first Smartphone/Android. Being unfamiliar with this I cannot get Googlemail to sync.
I followed the on screen prompts. Set it up for IMAP. But I'm not sure if googlemail.com is the IMAP server. Or should it be smtp.googlemail.com

What security type?
What Server port?

Its went through with SSL and server port 993 but it just won't download any emails, etc.
Help please?

You shouldn't need to configure any of that for Googlemail just type in your Googlemail address & pass word. i.e. bring up the apps/All programs page, find "Google mail" app & tap on that to open it. Then if it doesn't ask you to sign in or create account tap the phone menu button to bring up the options and then choose "accounts" then "Add Account". Tap Google and that will take you through the set up process. At no point should it be asking things like security type or server port.

This should be dead straight forward, make sure you use the Gmail app, not the HTC Mail app for this...

To configure the 'Email' app on an Android device for access to Google Apps email, just follow the steps below:

Enable IMAP in your Mail settings.
On your phone, press < Home >, then open the Email application.
On the 'Your accounts' page, select Next to get started with setup.
Enter your full Google Apps email address and password, then select Next.
Select IMAP account and then select Next.
On the 'Incoming server settings' page, some fields may be pre-populated. Make sure to change the following:

For 'Username,' enter your full Google Apps email address
For 'IMAP server,' enter 'imap.gmail.com'
For 'Port,' enter '993'
For 'Security type,' select 'SSL (always)''

Select Next.
On the 'Outgoing server settings' page, some fields may be pre-populated. Make sure to change the following:

For 'SMTP server' enter 'smtp.gmail.com'
For 'Port,' enter '465'
For 'Security type,' select 'SSL (always)''

Select Next and continue through the setup options.
You can verify your settings from the Inbox view by tapping < Menu > > Account settings.

Incoming settings
IMAP server: imap.gmail.com
Port: 993
Security type: SSL (always)

Outgoing settings
SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
Port: 465
Security type: SSL (always)

That's for andriod phones that don't have the Google Mail app, (can't think of any that spring to mind though). And hey I mentioned the Goggle Mail app first and gave instructions, where's my love

So have you got it sorted now ???

What we mean is the Google Mail app that comes with the device pre loaded (see my instructions), not one that you get from the andriod Market.

Nope, I use the pre installed mail app with the Desire and.... WAIT!!!

Colleague has just solved it. Apparently, it doesn't sync your old mail. Only new mails. So, after configuring it, I then sent me a new email. The Desire then picked it up nicely.
