HTC Desire - Using Email Problems

    Hi.. I'm Demsie,

I’ve tried searching the Desire official thread but come up with nothing so I thought I could post new thread, hope this ok ? As I’m new.

    Anyhoo..

Got my Desire yesterday (moved over from iPhone) and so far am pretty impressed, my problem is with the Email “Widget”.

I have set up a googlemail account, and I have downloaded the Google mail app, which is working fine.

My problem is this.. I want to use the email widget on one of my home screens. When I tap to add an account, if I try “Exchange ActiveSync” or “Other POP3/IMPAP” I add my user name and password and I get the following message..

“Cannot connect to the mail server to verify your account information. Your server is not responding”

My internet connection is working fine, when I use the Google Mail App, I can get my emails fine.. Which is why I’m confused..

Does anyone have any ideas whatsoever ? Any help would be greatly received as it’s really frustrating..

Am i being stupid (more than likely)

    Cheers

Re: HTC Desire - Using Email Problems

Are you trying to add your google account to the mail widget?

It isn't for that, as it says in the settings, it's for Exchange Activesync or POP3/IMAP use only.

Yes I am.. That's exactly what i'm trying to do.

I don't know what Exchange Activesync or POP3/IMAP email accounts are so that's probably why i'm struggling.

Can you please enlighten me ?

P.S. i did say it was likely to be me being stupid

Don't try an add your Gmail account the Widget way.

Go into the App draw, find the Maill app, open it. And add the account there. When prompted just select POP3/IMAP account. And enter your demise@googlemail.com and the app will automate the rest of the process.

Re: HTC Desire - Using Email Problems

There are two mail apps on the Desire. One is the Gmail App (Red envelope icon) this can be found in the menu where all the other apps are. The other by default on the homescreen is the mail app for Exchange and other types of email. You can remove that off the home screen and add the Gmail App by pressing the + on the bottom right of the home screen, then App then Gmail.

Re: HTC Desire - Using Email Problems

    Correct.

"Exchange ActiveSync" is for if you want to connect to a corporate Microsoft Exchange server. This lets you sync your Inbox, Calendar, Contacts and other items with your companies server to have the same data on your phone as in Outlook on your PC in the office.

"POP3/IMAP" these are two different ways to get email, usually from your ISP or other email provider that supports that way of connecting instead of using a web interface.

You can access GMAIL via pop3 / smtp , you need to alter settings in the settings web page for your account.
You can also enable IMAP access from the same page.

Re: HTC Desire - Using Email Problems

However, you are still best to use the Gmail app for Gmail.

You can get other widgets from the Merketplace that will replicate the "unread" count on the icon for Gmail, like you would get for the HTC widget.

Re: HTC Desire - Using Email Problems

You could try "pure messenger widget" which is really good for displaying emails within your gmail app. It's not free but it's regularly updated and is skinnable.
