Porting from contract to port back to the same network

    Has anyone done this?

I'm wanting to port my current (and long standing) number from my current contract to a new PAYG number so I can port it back to my new contract

Both contracts are on the same network (Vodafone).

Is there any additional cost to this? What is the rough time scale and are there any networks best to port to? I'm porting from (then eventually back to) Vodafone so needs to be tmob, orange, o2 or similar as apparently I can't port on the same network

I did this a few years ago from Orange to T-mobile PAYG and it took a week.

Just check to see if you have to wait before porting it back.

Within network you usually have to wait for x months. Probably best porting to PAYG on a different network then back to Voda, although they might still have that covered off in T&Cs

Re: Porting from contract to port back to the same network

I do this every time I get a new contract. I port my number to O2 and then back again, it only takes up to a week and when I phone O2 for my PAC code after only having just connected I usually say "it looks like I don't get O2 at work so I'm going to have to go to another network".

I usually have to top up the O2 SIM card with £10 but I somehow got away without doing this last time. Still £10 is a small price to pay to be classed as a new customer for the deals on offer.

surely if you are taking a new contract from vodafone and your old contract will be dead then you can just direct port the number.

    That's all we do here.

I will point out though that vodafone cannot port a number into an already running contract apparently I don't know why as most other networks can.

I know this because I have a long standing number with vodafone and I have 2 contracts with them. One expires a year after the other so when the first runs out I wanted to port my number over to the other contract but was informed they cannot do it as the contract is already established.

My daughter works in the vodafone shop in town and she checked as well and there seems to be no way around it.

Usually networks enforce that you cannot port from the same network, its an internal check they do, eg. Vodafone won't accept a Vodafone PAC code.

Your old contract would not be dead when the contract finishes, it would just continue on a rolling contract until you choose to do something about it, eg. upgrade cancel etc. I don't think you can port a number that has been cancelled, it still needs to be active and the act of porting the number gives your 30 days notice on the contract and terminates it. Certainly this has been the way it has always worked for me in the past.

well when my wife changed contracts about 8 months ago she kept her number from her old contract and both were on vodafone.

We had already given notice to cancel the contract before that and it only had about a week left on it when she took a new one.

Different country different rules I suppose

i WAS going to do this but when comparing deals as a new customer and the offer from the O2 retentions team I could not beat what I was offered

    500min, unlimited texts, 500mb data, unlimited 02 to 02 calls, £37 per month for 12 months, £130 upfront for a iphone 4S 16gb.

So less than you'd get from Three for £30 a month? Cracking deal, O2!
