Multitasking on iOS 5 vs Android 3.2...HELP!!!

    Hi there!

I am on the verge of mental breakdown. i am now looking for a good tablet and i have brought it down to just two: the iPad 2 and the HTC Flyer (Wifi).

I want to ask about multitasking. the multigesture finger swiping of the iPad 2 vs the one-button touch of the Honeycomb-enabled HTC Flyer.

I have a laptop and i like doing multitasking on it. If i was to surf multiple websites, watching a movie, going my facebook & twitter, checking the weather & news apps, reading a PDF file, watching Youtube videos all at the same time which device and OS at the moment would you consider best in multitasking skills? (including the ability to kill/stop running apps easily)

please advice. i need to buy that tablet by monday.

    Thanks.

WebOS is pretty decent for multi-tasking due to its use of cards. OTH,it really only flies when the CPU is running at full speed on my TouchPad. The only issue is that the TouchPad is not available any more.

I would definitely have a look at ICS to see what improvements it will bring and I assume there should be an iOS update when the iPad3 is released.

In my opinion, I OS multitasking feels like an after-thought and doesn't truly multi-task with many apps, only official or certified apps will multi-task fully.

Android supports multi-tasking from the ground up and the dedicate application switching button makes swapping between different apps really easy. I would consider some other android tablets as despite them making some rather good phones, the HTC Flyer is in my opinion not the best (unless you really must have a stylus). I would look at the Asus Transformer or Trasformer Prime. The Samsung 8.9 and 10.1" Tabs are both also good contenders but have more limited connectivity.

Haven't used Honeycomb / ICS but in earlier versions of Android you don't really get true mutlitasking - some apps can run as a service and will continue in the background, but most will be suspended if you switch to another app. The tablet I've used that handles multitasking best is the Playbook - it genuinely multitasks, and you switch between full screen tasks either by swiping from the edge of the screen, or pulling up the home screen and flicking betwen tiles. If you haven't messed with one yet go and demo a playbook: PC World currently have the 16GB version online at £169 and (as I've said a number of times recently) I reckon it's a fantastic piece of kit at that price...

I feel Samsung Galaxy Tabs are overpriced. If there is any Galaxy Tab i will buy its probablly gonna be the 7.0 Plus or the newer 7.7. but again they are still overpriced in my opinion. The Acers & the Asus' have 10.1" screen and for me its way too big.

HTC Flyer suits me because it is compact and the fast processor. the iPad 2 suits me also because of the overall experience and vast amounts of apps. so i'd like to concentrate on those two for now.

The way i see it each have their own advantages. but which one really is easier, more comfortable and more ideal in real-world mulitasking.

    A finger swipe or a one-button switching?

If you're talking about multitasking as in having two things on the screen at once, then no, no tablet can do that. Otherwise they are all much of a muchness as far as switching between open/active applications.

There are fully multitasking tablets out there, I have one, its 6 years old and I recently updated it to run win 7. I also have a modern android tablet, out of the two win7 matches my needs better than android, hopefully win8 will add better touch features rather than take away aspects like proper multitasking, user accounts, etc. To be honest if I was buying at the moment I would look at something cheap, android, and thats well supported by the modding community.

I was quite impressed with the multitasking gesture swiping of the iPad 2 when i saw it in the Apple store today. i feel it's much more "natural" swiping with the fingers and seeing to different open apps and easily deleting them.

The advantage of the iPad i see is whilst you surf through the apps it is in full screen whilst in Android there is this somehow annoying (but also useful) taskbar at the bottom wherein you touch the activity button to see your different apps.

With the iPad you can also double press the home button and task switcher will pop up (as on the iPhone).

The Blackberry Tablet UI is a clone of WebOS, including the way multitasking handles

Re: Multitasking on iOS 5 vs Android 3.2...HELP!!!

Evidence suggest the WebOS was copied by Blackberry Tablet OS. iOS 5 has started copying the Android OS (like with the Notifications Bar) and vice versa. i feel they are all hypocrites just trying to outdo each other and see which one comes on top.

But i think it's not about that. i think its all about healthy competition. and basically what a person feels best suits him/her.

Really? Never used WebOS, so hadn't realised.

Doesn't change the fact that I *really* like the way it works

As a side question how do i exactly wipe-off or kill an app in Honeycomb 3.2? (via the one-button multitasking launcher).

All i know is with the iPad 2 you long-press an app and just press "X".
