Question I need a new USB charger

Last night the HTC charger under my bed went "PUFFFFFF" and let the magic smoke out.

I only want to spend a few quid, but I don't want something built for 200mA but with a 500mA sticker on it (i.e. I don't want another thing going PUFFFF).

So, anyone know of a good quality 1 amp USB charger (I'm going 1 amp just for headroom... I ain't gettin' no iPad, foo').

    Thanks.

1 amp through a USB port ? (Maybe I misunderstood)

I recently bought one of these.
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/veho-...tc-a-must-have
    Works fine.

Re: I need a new USB charger

Well, iPads need 1 amp to charge. So rather than get some crappy charger I thought I'd go for something capable of charging one of those, then I have more confidence that my little HTC Desire isn't going to smoke it.

edit: The charger you linked to. It doesn't mention iPad so it's probably regular 500mA. But more importantly, it doesn't actually say. It would be remiss of me to trust a power supply that doesn't advertise its ratings on the specs page.

Ok - I always thought that the max draw on a USB was 500mA.

Re: I need a new USB charger

Yeah, it is on USB1.1/2 hubs. But USB 3 allows for higher currents to be negotiated, and with appropriate pull-ups/-downs on the data lines in a mains to USB charger, you can tell the attached device that it's allowed to draw more.

Even before USB3 you could get chargers that would deliver more than the standard 500mA. Usually means you can use a device while also charging it at a decent rate.

Yeah, like I said with the right pull-ups/-downs you have provide however much you want via a main-only charger.

It has two USB sockets, so 1 amp through each one.

*** it has taken me this long to realise that I typed I instead of it! fixed it now thanks to a certain spammer that got banned within 0 posts according to his stats. Way to go!

Re: I need a new USB charger

I know this is an older thread, and I'm following a spam comment, but would still be interested in your promised review of the charger Steve - or is it neither good/crap?

    Edit - clarified question

Re: I need a new USB charger

Well, it has been charging my phone every night, and sometimes an additional one, and hasn't gone "poof" yet, so it gets a thumbs up from me.

It's not had to juice up an iPad though, so hasn't exactly had an acid test.

Why don't you use regular USB cable and:

    instead?
