Well its nothing new, here is my latest model :-
Jon
Not seen the Galaxy Note 8.0 yet have you ?
It's still smaller than my regular landline phone and still fits in my pocket, I'm not sure what the problem is.
I don't see what the problem is. If it is too big for you, don't buy it. If people don't buy them, they won't make them. If people end up looking stupid using them, that's their own look out.
You're not forced to buy anything. The last time I checked, Samsung still sell smaller form factor devices. So if this isn't convenient for you, don't buy it!
Some people appreciate a larger phone; they are better for watching movies, useful in business when taking notes... all sorts of reasons. Just because Sammy have addressed one small market segment doesn't mean that there aren't alternatives!
You're forced to buy it if you want good performance or an assurance it will be updated! Smaller size is becoming more and more synonymous with lower spec. I (and im certainly not alone in this) want a sensible size phone that i can use with one hand but has a decent resolution and fairly high spec CPU. As far as i can tell there is a pretty sweet gap in the market for this kind of device.
Of course i could buy nothing, but in reality i will probably end up compromising and getting a stupid sized phone.
Sorry, I disagree. If you want a smaller phone then there are products with decent performance to buy. It's true that smaller phones tend to have a lower spec, but it's a smaller phone... you can't fit all the bells'n'whistles into it.
1) Device vendors will only provide a long upgrade cycle if the product sells well. Generally, if a product bombs in the market place it will received a single update or any contractual upgrade that they've agreed with the carrier / retail outlet. Or you jail break / root/reflash with generic software. This is nothing new and fit in with the generla refresh of devices inline with carrier contract arrangements.
2) The Sammy S3 mini is a cracking phone. It doesn't have a mega spec CPU, but then it doesn't need one in order to work well enough in the form factor it is. There are plenty of other examples of devices that are small form factor with decent processors.
Apple aside (until they release their new range), device manufacturers will only make phones that they believe will sell, or with a business case to justify lower sales in order to meet a particular market. If the market doesn't consider mid-sized devices with high powered CPUs attractive, then it's not the vendors fault for not releasing devices.
Im not asking for the top dog, im asking for good enough and none of them at the moment combine a decent resolution with a decent spec... i want one so trust me i have looked. Apple have almost managed to get size and spec right. I would say a little bigger and 720p, job done.... if it wasn't for iOS.
Sony seem to be pretty close aswell, so im keeping my eye on them.
But the iPhone 5 hasnt bombed, it still sells well therefore its a form factor that people still want, perhaps that's just because its apple? None of the other manufacturers have really tried pushing a slightly smaller size as a flagship or close to flaghip so how would they know? Go onto the Engadget comments on big phones and see how many people are saying that they want a decent 4.2(ish) sized phone.
The S3 mini is a decent handset, but its not quite there.
Why are we setting apple aside? They have a pretty hefty market share, you cant set aside the company that proves my point just so you're right.
I'd agree with Biscuit. I've currently got a Sensation, and that's big enough for me. But it's blimmin' slow. If they did an HTC One-4 at the same size, I'd snap it up. As it is, to get a decent spec (720p, decent RAM, fast chip), I have to go 4.7" or higher. Are the latest ARM chips any bigger than the dual-core I've got in the Sensation?
