apparently you need a different box number and it works fine, there is a bloke on tech-tronix who has claimed to unlock it successfully using a different box serial number

Yeh you can unlock them but thats not the issue, you'll have problems because the phone will always look for a 3G network because 3 have disabled the menu that lets you choose between 3G and GSM. You need to get the menu renabled, the attached guide in this thread will explain better than I can.
