Hexus has surprisingly not covered this story (at least I could not find it after searching), which is causing quite a stir on the web.

Canonical has started a campaign on Indiegogo to try and raise $32 million in 30 days to produce what they describe as, “a low-volume, high-technology platform, crowdfunded by enthusiasts and mobile computing professionals.”

If the project is green-lighted, they aim to produced a limited run of around 40,000 units by May 2014 running both Android (AOSP) and Ubuntu mobile. Both OSes will be able to transition to a full Ubuntu desktop, when connected to a larger screen.

Specifications have not yet been finalised but this is what they have announced so far:

*Dual boot Ubuntu mobile OS and Android
*Fully integrated Ubuntu desktop PC when docked
*Fastest multi-core CPU, 4GB RAM, 128GB storage
*Micro-SIM
*4.5in 1,280 x 720 HD sapphire crystal display
*8mp low-light rear camera, 2mp front camera
*Dual-LTE, dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4, NFC
*GPS, accelerometer, gyro, proximity sensor, compass, barometer
*Stereo speakers with HD audio, dual-mic recording, Active Noise Cancellation
*MHL connector, 3.5mm jack
*Silicon-anode Li-Ion battery
*64 x 9 x 124mm

It sounds like an awfully ambitious project that will be very difficult to get funded – particularly given the short time for funding and manufacturing, 10 months (an age in the tech world) for the product to be released, after they have your money and lack of concrete details.

On the other hand they do promise a level of convergence not yet achieved and it might be useful for people concerned with privacy (if they can get over the Amazon débâcle). Oh, and it sounds like a geek's dream!
