    SE 910x

I used to own a p900 and thought it was superb, so... I sell it! Have had a XDA2 since and what with getting a work ipaq and as a phone not what I would call reliable i'm looking to replace it again...

is the SE 9xx still without competition? i've seen the 910 has more memory/larger capacity duo slot than the old 900, are there any other differences? I've also seen P910a's and P910i's - any difference?

Last question... any good offers on them at the moment that people know of?

The SE P910 is still the daddy, IMO. It's combines very good phone functionality, with decent PDA functionality. I really like the hand-writing recognition on it too.

    It's main competitors are:

    • Motorola A1000: Runs the same SymbianOS/UIQ combo that the SE PXXX, but adds dual camera (1.3MP on the outside) and 3G support. It's only available on 3 though, which means no internet access, and doesn't have a flip.
    • Orange M2000/O2 XDAsomething: New Pocket PC phone with slide-out keyboard. A great PDA but as a phone I think it's questionable. I'm still not convinced that Microsoft really understands that the primary function of a phone is calls and texts.
    • Nokia 9500: The latest communicator from Nokia. Large and no touch screen, but it does have wifi and a nice keyboard.
    • Nokia 7710: More of a media player than a series business tool. Widescreen/touchscreen VGA display with a really great UI. Has a 1MP camera and web browser with flash player (yes, you can watch Badger Badger Badger on the train now! ). Very little 3rd party software for it though.

The 'i' in the model number stands for international and means that the phone supports the 900/1800/1900Mhz GSM frequency bands used in most countries in Europe/Asia/Africa. Similarly, the 'a' stands for America and means that the phone supports the 850/1800/1900Mhz GSM frequency bands used in North America. If you pick up a P910 in the UK that it will be the 'i' version.

The main improvements over the P900 are:

    • 262k colour screen
    • Support for memory sticks up to 1GB
    • Mini-keyboard on the inside of the flip
    • Comes with QuickOffice pre-installed

The 7710 looks quite tasty. Any idea if there's any wifi support/add-on cards available? To be honest, the lack of wifi is the only problem I've got with my P900, so I'm looking at the newer XDA-style phones such as the MDA3. The 9500 is far too big and cumbersome. Any other suggestions of wifi-capable phones?

The only chance for a add-on wifi card would be if the 7710 supported SDIO, which uses the SD memory card slot. Sadly, the 7710 uses MMC memory cards so that isn't possible.

As far as phones with wifi, the only ones available are a handful of Pocket PC PDAs and the Nokia 9500. I'd imagine that by next Christmas, wifi will be pretty much standard on smartphones though.

I've heard poor reviews about the PocketPC/XDA/MDA range too. Looks like I'll hold out for the next-gen Pxxx and hope that has wifi.

Thanks Aaron, I had just figured out the difference between 'i' and 'a' should of looked back here right away! I think what you've said has confirmed the hours of reading over the weekend too - time to find a decent deal.

AFAIK, the P900 will only sync with Outlook, Lotus Notes and Windows Address Book. Sorry.
