Poweramp is good, used to use it a lot before I started paying for Amazon music (pay for 5 people to use the family subscription)
You should use an existing music streaming player or Spotify
Quite apart from the thread necro (almost 2.5 years, good going ), I specifically said in the OP that I only want to play music from my SD card. So why on earth would you suggest a streaming player?
Anyway, I'm back at this thread because I've just grabbed a new phone (I finally dropped the keyONE once too often and bent the SIM tray ) and I've got the same issue again - this time Play Music wasn't even installed by default!
So, has anything changed in the last three years? Are there any must have apps that are new? I never went back to VLC so I assume the bluetooth glitch I noticed back then was resolved by changing app (to Play Music, as it happens) - however, I've recently upgraded the speaker system and I now tend to plug in via 3.5mm jack (which the new phone also has) so perhaps I should just give VLC another go.
But if anyone has an alternative suggestion, I'm still all ears
EDIT:
Just a quick update, I've decided to give Rocket Player a go first up - let's see what I think of it

I can't offer any help, having only really used the Amazon app to stream from Amazon Unlimited, but a current project (when I get one of those famous round tuit's), is to digitise my CD, LP and tape collection .... at which point, a good player (which suits me) becomes a priority. So I'll be watching suggestions in here with considerable interest.
A lesson learned from PeterB about dignity in adversity, so Peter, In Memorium, "Onwards and Upwards".
Can't really recommend a player, as I use Spotify, however Play Music is actually just about to be wound down in favour of Youtube Music.
A lot of very unhappy people I've had come into my PhoneShop for advice and guidance, but most don't want to use a streaming service.

I use pulsar - it meets my needs of:
1) plays music
2) has a "shuffle all" button
3) has shuffle on/off and repeat track toggles on the widget
Making playlists is too much effort, so I either listen to specific albums or shuffle my way through all 30 gigs at once
