Good non-subscription app for Notes, on iPad. Suggestions?

As the title really, anyone got an experience-based suggestion of a decent note-taking app for iPad? It doesn't need to be the latest, all-singing, all-dancing package.

I'm looking either for a free app, or for one with a one-off lifetime fee (that isn't stupid-big, obviously). I REALLY don't like subscription apps and for something like notes, am plain not doing that.

I might eventually decide to just settle for the vanilla but free built-in Notes, that comes on the iPad. But before I do that, any iPad users got any suggestions?

I just use the built in one. Its the same one on iPhone as it is on the iPad.

Its functional and does what I want it to.

Are there any features in particular you are looking for?

Not specifically no. Which leads me to suspect the vanilla Notes may well be just fine for me, too. It's just that as being totally new to the Apple World (well, technically, that's not true as I still have the Apple II Europlus I got in, erm, 1979 I think, and the last Apple I used prior to the iPad was an Apple Lisa ) so to all practical ends, I'm a noob.

Where was I? Oh yeah, complete noob so really just looking for ideas of note-taking, and for that matter, general productivity tools, because (unlike Win/Linux) I have zero preconceptions and if there's an obvious "way better" than notes/files etc, I'd rather just go straight to that.

I do have certain things specifically in mind, the first being Procreate, but also Affinity Photo, and hence a look at Affinity Designer too. Also thinking LumaFusion, or maybe DaVinci Resolve. Got some sound software too (came with a Motu M4 interface) but can't remember the name off-hand.

So on those more specialised creator-type tools, I'm more or less sorted. Oh, Scrivener for writing, too. But it's the general productivity stuff that's open. Notes, calendar, maybe file management too, if the built-in tool is too limiting (which I don't yet know). No email though. Don't plan on having any on this. On that note (excuse pun) I'm not planning on sync'ing things like contacts or calendars either. Won't bother with contacts on this, and won't be doing email. That's staying on PC, and isolated.

i also don't mind paying for really good software, up to a point, provided it's sufficiently better than free or default ones. Just no subscriptions unless there's absolutely no way to avoid it.
