block camera update on pixel 3a/4a

Hello folks. Does anyone know how I can block Google from updating the camera app on my pixel 3a and 4a?

I have them in Dev mode and auto update is disabled both for the OS and in play store for the apps. However play store keeps trying to download the camera update. Each day I cancel it, each day it resets and starts again saying "waiting for WiFi to continue large download".

I'm not sure if I've inadvertently clicked on update in the app at some point but reading the reviews of recent versions I definitely do not want to. Is there a setting I need to revert somewhere to undo this/force block any further download?

If you find it in Play Store, on the page where it has Uninstall and Open buttons, there's a hamburger menu at the top, there's an "Enable auto-update" checkbox .

yeah that's disabled. It keeps retrying to update it. The app no longer appears in the "updates" list. If I manually navigate to the page in the playstore it shows as "pending" . I cancel it. The next day it reappears as pending. I've tried force stopping play store. Everything is set to not update. It goes back to pending. It's driving me mad. Has it downloaded the apk and is waiting for a reboot to install it? I don't want it! It borks so much according to the playstore user reviews.

I've backed up the apk files in case something gets forced onto it. God bless dev mode.
