Thats nothing! There was a while, back in march, that Samsung and LG kept trying to one up each other on camera phone resolutions. Samsung have ended up with the SCH-V770 in south korea that is 7MP!!!

very true. i don't know what the internals are of the V770, but it *looks* like a camera with a phone included rather than the other way round. If that is the case then 7mp is far more usable. (notice the 3x optical zoom)

Up until a week ago I'd have agree'd with you, I was however very impressed by the way some pictures I took with my 6310i at a Trivium gig came out, its very hard to photograph a gig with a proper digital slr the photographer that takes photo's of us takes maybe 120 shots some nights and 20 come out ok due to the constant changes in light source and movement, mosta the pics I took on my camera came out suprisingly well though and well above what I expected.

But it has a proper shutter. The lack of a shutter is the fundamental difference that separates mobile camara's and proper camera's. Proper optics helps too, but the key is a shutter. You can have the best optics and chip, but they are nothing without a real shutter. Thats why the N90 has not lived up to the hype.

Cameraphones will never match stand-alone cameras for sheer quality, but that's not the point of them.

Your Olympus may take superb pictures, way beyond what a cameraphone is capable of, but how often do you take it out with you? Does it fit in your pocket or do you need to carry it in a bag?

The great thing about a cameraphone is that it's always on you. You never have to make a conscious decision to take it with you and it's always there when you need it. It's great for those spontaneous moments where you think "damn, I wish I had my camera with me". The quality isn't amazing, but it's 'good enough' for the situation. It's a complimentary rather than replacement technology, in my opinion.

i do think that high end camera phones will replace a lot of the lower to mid range on point-and-shoot digital cameras. But i also think that the higher end point and shoots, like the 10-12x optical zoom models will also become more and more popular. Thus puching up peoples expectations and maintaining the market. if you see what i mean...

hmm i agree with you to a point funkstar, but i dont think 10-12x will actually take much of the market. i've got one, and its great, but before digital, not many people brought high-zoom cameras (they've been around for ages if you think about it) - most went for cheapish small cameras, and i think that trend will continue

On another note, some people say to me why bring a phone and iPod to college; lol it kinda defeats the purpose though of buying portable items if you are only going to use them at home. Who uses their iPod at home when you have last.fm+*audio player of choice*?!

Bringing a phone to college was worth it anyway, I get all sorts of calls, even from a big White Label company that was interested in my material, as well as a record company

Staying off topic, i am getting an ipod to mainly use at home. I am sick of my hundreds of CD getting scratched and mixed up. One of the HiFi docks with a remote looks like the was forward for me.

I think it's the way of most convergence devices - they offer a tempting price point, convenience, and so on, and will take over the low end of a market. The high-end equipment will not be superceeded by convergence devices readily - you're not likely to get reference quality audio on convergence devices, for example, but there comes a point where devices are good enough to meet most peoples needs - as the camera phones are starting to - with decent quality optics for a start.
