It's not that simple though, is it?

Ok windows had less security holes/took less time to fix than ABC, but if there are say, 97% of hackers/evildoers attacking windows and 3% attacking all the other os's, then which would you say is safer to use (assuming that you take all sensible precautions)?

Me, I use windows/linux, AV, AS, anti-rootkit and as much common sense as I can muster.

Interesting but the word Vista is not mentioned and what sort of English is this from a direct link from the article:-

Well perhaps I ought to make a note of this to scream loudly at the screen the next time I see one of those bloody Mitchell & Webb Mac vs PC ads at the cinema!

(PS I'm not a 'PC fanboy' or antiMac or anything. I really don't care enough about any platform, they all do essentially the same thing in my view.)

it's a general measure of the number of vulnerabilities in the products

which means all the stuff installed as standard

this is why non-windows vulns were reported as "less critical" - it includes things like OOo and Evolution on red hat, but not Office on windows

I think all OSs are fairly secure these days as long as you have a bit of common sense. I've had one 'virus' in about 4 or 5 years. And that was because of a vulnerability in firefox (which imo isn't as secure as everyone thinks). I simply went on a website, then avg popped up and said a trojan had been detected, was a .bat file or something I think, which firefox had downloaded automatically. (although, I knew the virus was there, I was trying to use my uber-secure pc to find out which virus it was as a friends pc had been attacked by it, and then was shocked that firefox downloaded it automatically, although it did say do you want to download this file, it had already downloaded it before i clicked anything).

But yea, never had a virus in years, whenever I fix people's pcs it's because they've either downloaded warez, or smiley central. Browser hijacks are the most common I've come across actually, searchweb2 or something like that? was a complete bitch to remove. Think it comes bundled with msn plus?

Yeah really interesting that an OS released in Jan 2007 wasn't mentioned in 2006's stats

I was wondering about whether OpenOffice.org and suchlike would be counted - I should have known you'd get to that point first! I would be interested to know the number of vulnerabilities when those packages are discounted - there again, it's not easy to decide which packages count and which do not.
