    Data Protection Execution

This is a bit of an odd one I've never experienced before...

Trying to fix a friends PC, XP Pro, and for months and months its had an error pop up (can't remember the exact wording) regarding Data Protection Execution.

When opening (these are the only folders I can remember, apologies) My Computer or My Documents, for example, a Data Protection Execution error pops up and the said folder won't open. Click ok on the message box that appears, and reopen, and it works fine!

    Whats caused that?

I've tried turning it off in System Properties > Advanced > Performance Options > Data Protection Execution (months ago) and the message still comes up.

Any ideas how to stop it?! Its so infuriating!

    Ta!

    try this support note here

looks like you might be able to disable it by adding:
    Code:
    /noexecute=AlwaysOff
to the end of the boot line in c:\boot.ini
