    Ubuntu

    Hello!

I am making a server, It's based around a Shuttle with an XP2600+ and 512MB of memory. It will be accessed by my xbox (softmodded), computer and laptop. I'm going to install Ubuntu as the operating system and Samba server.

My question to you is, Ubuntu Desktop or Ubuntu Server? I have little to no experience with Linux in any shape or form. How does Ubuntu Server differ from the Desktop offering?

I'd also like to access it remotely as I don't want the need for a keyboard, mouse and monitor to be connected to the PC. Is remote access possible without installing any additional software on my Windows XP machine or on the Ubuntu box itself.

    Thanks guys.

    laze.

    Re: Ubuntu

afaik ubuntu server doesn't have a graphical shell - you'd access it via ssh so you might need a ssh client like putty.

as for the xbox I guess you are using xbmc ? set up ccxstream on the linux box

    Re: Ubuntu

install the desktop version if you want clickies. the server has no gui by default

then, first, go to System/Preferences/Remote Desktop to enable the VNC server functionality

then go to System/Administration/Shared Folders to set up a SAMBA share

    Re: Ubuntu

    Thanks.

I've just attempted to install Ubuntu and couldn't...

I feel stupid already as I know the solution will end up being an obvious one.

    My problem is as follows:

When I boot from the Ubuntu CD and select "Install or run Ubuntu" I arrive at a functioning desktop. I then double-click the Install icon only to find I'm unable to navigate through each screen as my resolution means the "next" button is cut off the bottom.

Is there an alternate installation method? I tried 'Install Ubuntu with Driver Update CD' after downloading the video drivers and placing them on a disk but this brought me to a black screen with cursor.

I then tried the first option again, 'Install or run Ubuntu' and tried installing the video driver once in the desktop but the CD drive wouldn't eject. Predictably so as it's running the OS from CD, doh!

    Help?

    laze.

    Re: Ubuntu

There is an alternate install CD which has a text-based installer - which I always use, because I perfer it.

Just tick the "Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer." button when you download Ubuntu from the official website.

Alternativley, I'm sure the LiveCD must have options to change the resolution, and if not - I'm sure there is a way to move a 'window' even without being able to grab it from the top and shift it, I just can't a) remember for sure or b) tell you how!

I'd go the Alternate Install CD route in any case.

    Re: Ubuntu

You can change the resolution though due to the lack of driver the highest value is 800x600.

I did try dragging the window but it would not let me drag it above the upper taskbar. I'm sure there is a method to view the entire window.

I'll download the alternative version, as you suggested.

    Thanks.

    Re: Ubuntu

hold "alt" and you can drag a window from the middle - though on regular ubuntu, this won't help much, as gnome enforces the "no dragging too far up" thing

    Hello,

I finally got around to installing Ubuntu, do I need to install drivers? The machine has an nForce2 chipset and it appears all the drivers have installed, though I wouldn't know how to check for certain... Is the nForce2 chipset supported by default? If so, all I need to do is install the latest linux video drivers from nVidia, right?

    Thanks.

all drivers for "core" hardware on linux are included. graphics drivers, go to system/administration/restricted drivers manager & tick the box to enable nvidia's driver

    Hello,

I've enabled the driver but cannot, for the life of me, have my screen run in it's native settings of 1680 x 1050 @ 60HZ. The maximum it will allow is 56HZ, actually the entire thing has fluffed up now and I'm not able to run any resolution other than 800x600 @ 73HZ.

    Any ideas?

    hit alt-f2, and type nvidia-settings

should be easy enough to set a res up using that tool
