Easiest way to make a new partition in winxp without erasing current data?

I'd like to split a 10GB section my hard drive (80GB) as another partition, but i can only find methods (so far) that require me to erase the entire drive first. As windows is on there at the moment, i'm not wild about reinstalling windows again.

Are there any (preferably freeware) programs that can create new partitions?

I presume something like Acronis will do the job, but free would be bettter

Re: Easiest way to make a new partition in winxp without erasing current data?

Oddly enough, i do have a couple of official (ie not burned myself) Ubuntu install CD's to hand, i kept meaning to install it, but it really doesn't seem to like my graphics card - so if i can sort out that problem, then i'd be happy to use it.

It loads up, i click install (or the live disc option) and it goes black for a bit, and then the cursor appears, i get a prompt that it can't find my graphics card so needs to run in low gfx mode - fine. But then after i click ok, it just hangs on one of the bootup screens - i assume it's either supposed to go into Gnome or give me an installation window?

Download the Gparted live ISO and burn that to disk and boot off it.

As for Ubuntu, there is probably a command line option that allows you to select a resolution (normally 600x800) and text mode for the install. Once installed you can sort out the graphics driver problem. (Not a Ubuntu user myself) A later version might have drivers for your card installed (depends on how old your disks are!)

That's the odd thing though, it comes up with a box saying configure as well, and it's got the 8 series drivers installed on it, and no amount of fiddling seems to work

I've downloaded and burnt Gparted anyways

Defrag your disk before making the new partition (also before installing Linux as dual boot).
