    Microsoft Office 2007

Hi. Not sure whether this goes in this section or not, but it didn't seem to fit anywhere else.

Anyway, this is following on from my thread in the 'hexus.hardware' section titled 'Another 2GB or 4GB thread'.

I have the option of adding Microsoft Office 2007, Home and Student version, onto a laptop I plan to buy for the additional charge of £70. I was wondering if this means that they'd install it for me and that I won't get a CD, because then I couldn't install it onto other computers I have at home. Someone told me that the new Microsoft Office 2007 only works on one computer anyway, so should I go for this option? Or if not, would it be more worth it to buy the software separately? Oh, and does Microsoft Office 2007 only work on Vista? Or XP as well?

    Thanks!

Sounds like you're going with Dell?

Anyway, even if you're not, just request an Office 2007 DVD with the computer.

You're not supposed to installed Office on more than one PC.

Lol, yeah it's the XPS M1530. I'm ordering online, so I don't think it'd be possible to request a DVD. I bought Microsoft Office 2003 a few years back and it said that I can install it on three computers max. I only installed it on two before I lost the CD, lol. So it makes sense to go with a Microsoft Office 2007, although I'm not sure if it can be installed on more than one computer or not.

Not really sure about the license agreement with Office 2007.

Order over the phone with Dell, do some haggling & request the CD

    Re: Microsoft Office 2007

Hmm, sounds like a good idea, lol.

But it just occured to me that don't they usually give a CD just in case something catastrophic like your hard drive wiping out happens? Or you need to format it.

I remember going to PC World before and buying Microsoft Office 2003 with my computer then, and it came with the box and everything. But I'm not sure if that was just because they didn't have time to install it or if they always give the whole box. I can't even remember if it was part of a deal or not, but I know I got it with my computer then.

    Re: Microsoft Office 2007

Depends on the manufacturer I guess. Some may just build Office into the recovery CD meaning to get it back you'd either have to extract it from the CD, or reinstall Windows completely.

    Re: Microsoft Office 2007

you will get a DVD with the dell because the CD pack has the OEM key on it that is needed when you first use this application!

You could always go with O2k7 student edition from Amazon that comes with 3 licences that is only about £10 more expensive.....

You can't blanket sweep across the entire range like that, they all have their own EULA

For example, on the student edition, you can install it in 3 machines. From the EULA:

    a. Licensed Device. You may install one copy of the software on three licensed devices in your household for use by people who reside there. The software is not licensed for use in any commercial, non-profit, or revenue-generating business activities.

    Re: Microsoft Office 2007

    What's O2k7?

And what's OpenOffice? I tried to look it up and it sounds like it's Microsoft Office 2003 related rather than Microsoft Office 2007. Is it a similar product to the Microsoft Office ones? Or is it a completely different software? I've already got Microsoft Office 2003 on two other computers, so I don't want something that's completely diffeerent or I won't be able to open files. And where would I get OpenOffice from?

    Thanks.

    Re: Microsoft Office 2007

You can get OpenOffice from OpenOffice.org. The interface is similar (though in no way identical) to Office 2003. It's Free, Open Source Software and... given how many people who use MS Office without using all of it's features it may well fill your criteria.

By all means give it a whirl, if you don't like it or can't get on with it then it's cost you nothing other than a 200Mb-ish (last time I checked) download and a little of your time and it may well be the best £70 you never spent.

EDIT - and O2k7 is shorthand for Office 2007

Anyone in your family at school, a teacher or a student?

If you go to Software4Students you can get Office 2007 Pro for £50! - normally £250

Found this out after spending £100 for Home & Student, D'oh. You can also get OS from them, I think Vista Ultimate 64bit was about £50

Oh and Yes Dell will send you a disc for Office and the OS
