webspace and uploading

im having real problems in uploading things to my web page. ive never setup a web page before so am very unsure how to do it. ive got a boradband package that gives me web space. im wanting to just use this to host drivers and links and pictures used for posting onto forums.
my problem is i dont really no where to start. can anyone either give me a link for a step ny step guide. or can someone explain in very simple terms how to get a file or pic from my pc to my webspace. cheers

what ISP are you with, they might have some information on their site about it... that asside, if you have FTP access, you could use something like cuteFTP (i'm sure other people will be able to recommend you other better, free clients) to upload your files, but you would need a username and password for that...

File Transfer Protocol. It enables you to upload/download files with ease. You'll need to know the directory where they go, username and password which you'll find out from Eclipse.

Don't they have a help section on their website? Maybe they'll list the info you need there?

no they are updating it. i think i know the directory. does myfiles.eclipse.co.uk sound right. i was trying to use a free package that someone recommended but cant get it to upload. is there a program that i can buy or downloads that is step by step use and is very easy to use. and will help me design a basic page and upload the files and page

I 'think' that most WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get - said 'wissywig' ) editors like Frontpage and Dreamweaver have the option of uploading your files for you. Plus it's a doddle to create a page using them if you have no HTML experience.

I would of thought the directory would be psalliss.eclipse.co.uk or something like that (if your username is psallis too), but I don't use Eclipse so wouldn't know. Tried to phone them to check?

Do you have any experience in programming at all? I can't really say if it'll be easy for you or not. Best thing to do is d/l the demo and check it out. It's like most packages where you design things, some are easy to grasp some are not.

I think it's easy once you get used to it coz you basically point and click your way through it. No hardcore programming needed.

used to be able to program but nope not any more. i only really want a very basic web site so point and click would be great. does it have a wizard system where you can do it step by step. and then upload

If you just use the demo you should have enough time (I think 30 days) to get a website going...

I'm sure there are other free alternatives around, but as I say I haven't been into this for a while so I'm afraid I don't know any.

For just simple upload/download to and from a web host you don't absolutely need FTP software anymore. If you are using Windows XP it has FTP features built in (and possibly older Microsoft OS's, not sure - just moved back to PC recently).

Most likely, to access you host, send your browser to ftp://myfiles.eclipse.co.uk - this should open a folder-like window in XP but is the public folder, so to get to your own private space, you will need to either Right Click on the window and selct Login As... then type in your username and password (which you will have set up when you registered and is often the bit of your email address which comes before the @ symbol and your email's password) and that may reload the folder as your own private folder, otherwise you may need to experiment with the ftp address itself.

It may be ftp://psallis.eclipse.co.uk or ftp://myfiles.eclipse.co.uk/psallis or ftp://psallis@myfiles.eclipse.co.uk - as I say, if there isn't anything on eclipse.co.uk's help pages, you may have to experiment with this. Once you get the correct one it will either automatically open the Login As... window so you can enter your password or you may have to Right Click and do it yourself.

Once you have your ftp account open, it acts like an external drive and you can just drag and drop files from your PCs harddrive directly into it and wait for them to upload. You can also download them the same way.

If you are using MacOS X it should theoretically be possible to access a webhost account in a similar manner although I have never managed to have much success getting it to work convincingly without repeated time-outs and lost connections - better to stick with Fetch or CuteFTP if you are using a Mac.



Regarding Dreamweaver Educational - this is exactely the same as the professional version except it costs less (and you have to prove you are astudent or lecturer to get the discount) and I believe that the license does not give you permission to use it except for educational purposes (e.g. you can't build your own profitable websites with it or use it to build websites for people who are paying you for the sevice).

SmartFTP is very good - even I can make it work
& it's free for personal use..
