I don't get why anyone would have to agree on Vista being anything as this relates to Windows 7, and for me I still experience problems with Vista but have stuck with it. Personally I don't feel that Vista was worth an upgrade from XP and it certainly isn't worth spending the money on within my corporate environment.

Sadly I doubt that Windows 7 is going to be embraced too eagerly by the business community at this present time due to financial constraints and the need for many businesses to conserve capital and rein in their spending, IT spend will be one of the things that is pinched hard.

I can see the bad press of Vista's launch is going to make many shy away from 7 until a service pack release.

Oh and have a free thanks, meant to press the quote but too early in the morning

Re: Windows 7 -When will you get it?

I want a chance to test the Beta first, I haven't bothered with Vista, for the main reason I don't need or want it, however, I think updating at some point will be good, just so I don't end up using XP for years to come.

voted not sure but only because the option for 'a few months after release' wasn't on there. should be enough time to hopefully get the bigger of the bugs ironed out for games etc. do i assume correctly that there will be a new DX version with W7?

Re: Windows 7 -When will you get it?

I'm not sure, there was talk of DX11 and/or DX10level9
what it seem to be was a couple of small additions and the removal of all eairlier versions, ie any dx9 or lower software or hardware will be run on a software emulation version of dx10

    Meh...

Not to fused to be honest (so i chose the "not sure" option)

Only use MS for gaming, im still happy on XP for that. (Use Linux as main os) Any news on how Windows 7 will affect gaming? Looks like ill be skipping past Vista either way

    *downloading anyway now to try.

Anyone know how much longer Win XP is supported for? a good few more years im hoping?

And it doesn't make sense for a lot of people. At least , in part, it depends where you're coming from. A friend of mine bought a new PC recently. He tried, for the second time, to get on with Vista but just doesn't like it. For XP went back on. For him, it wasn't even the cost since his PC came with a valid licence. And he's got about 25 years PC experience, so he goes back pretty much to their inception, including some years running a department supporting them. He's not an inexperienced user.

Another friend knows how to get on the net, and how to drive Word, and how to do basic tasks on XP, but much much more than that is beyond him. He got incredibly frustrated with Vista, and asked in desperation for me to take it off and put him back onto XP after he bought a new Vista-based PC.

And then, with me, that's three different types of user that aren't interested in, or are actively disinterested in Vista. And it may well be that people knocking it without knowing what they're talking about would be another category.

Not everyone that hasn't found Vista useful or of interest has made that decision because they love XP, but just because it does the job and they see no reason to change.

I have no doubt Vista is better in some significant ways. The driver model and security subsystem among them.

My point, therefore, related to comments like ....

Not every that hasn't gone XP to Vista is a purist. And taking the second reference at face value rather than with any inference of satire, many of us don't give a fig for fancy graphical effects if an OS just does the job. And not everyone that has stuck with XP hates Vista ... though some do. There may be people whose dislike of Vista is irrational, but it's far from the case that all those that won't upgrade are irrational about it.

What's hard to dispute is that Vista is far from the raging success MS hoped. There've been some problems, and there've been some spectacular own goals, like a rather clumsily implemented (or presented) UAC. Many of the problems have been addressed, but it's far from clear to me that they all have. Some experienced and capable users still maintain that Vista is a lot slower than XP. If it's just down to setup and configuration, then MS need to work on those aspects, because some experienced people are finding that. If they face a learning curve, then my computer-illiterate mate that wanted to go back to XP stand no chance.

I'm hoping that that type of issue has been addressed, and than Win7 proves to be what Vista should have been.

Many of the fundamental architectural changes implemented in Vista are well overdue, and whenever they were done, which they had to be sooner or later, were going to cause problems, such as with old hardware. Unless we stagnated, that much was inevitable.

It's all about real, achievable benefits. And that is my answer to the thread title .... I'll get W7 if and when it's clear that those benefits make it worth doing. And quite a few friends feel likewise. And it's certainly the case that a lot of business users are taking that line. They evaluate costs, and evaluate benefits and decide when and if to change accordingly.

And in my view, it's that last point that signals most clearly why Vista has failed ... because in large numbers, corporates are refusing to go to Vista because they don't see the cost-benefit gain. It's always a slow process, but with Vista it's been pretty much glacial.

Hopefully, W7 will correct that. But we'll see.

My point is, the majority of "lolz vista is t3h suck" comments is mostly purist drivil. That's not to imply that I think that is what you think, because that would be silly, I know you're far more rational than that, and if I was in your position I wouldn't bother with an enmass upgrade of a company network either, especially with the current economic chaos. At most I'd be experimenting with less costly and more robust alternatives with labs machines.

Re: Windows 7 -When will you get it?

Eventually, maybe. I'm with the others here who don't think it (or Vista) brings enough to the table to warrant the hassle or the price of an upgrade over XP.

Maybe that'll change in time but until then I'm sticking with XP.
