Which OS for the Acer Aspire One?

I got one of the 512mb ram / 160gb hard drive ones and I am not too fond of the restricted Linux OS on there. Is any other distro known to work well? Maybe Ubuntu?

Also does anyone know if it is possible to connect my WM6 PPC with one of these for syncing and connection sharing?

yeah, but it'll slow down your boot times as you need to wait for grub to appear & offer you a choice

The only added boot time is waiting for user input. You can change the time delay in /boot/grub/menu.lst.

I seem to remember Dangel using Windows 7 on one of these but I think he had upgraded the RAM. Worth considering?

No, i'm running a completely standard Acer One - 1gb RAM and 120gb HD. Windows 7 runs like an absolute dream on it - and yes, it 'feels' better than XP (i'm dual booting) on it The bundled linux install was crap tbh - it lasted all of ten minutes [note: because the distro chosen is crap]

Windows 7 adapts very well - i.e. if you ask it to save max. power it'll turn off aero and the new funky boot screen is disabled (presumably to not increase boot time on such a low powered device). Not tried Vista on it but i'm pretty sure it'd suck big time in all honesty by comparison..

Sim - read the guides and install and extra 1Gb, it's worth it. Search the laptops forum for posts I made on the subject.

There's even a hard drive mod I'm gonna try at some point:

http://qik.com/video/183950 ...as I have the SSD and it sucks monkey balls.

Only if you think there's just one model

In the same way you can have a SSD instead of a HD, you can have 512mb or 1gb

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspire_One

1gb = fine for W7. I chose the 1gb/120gb HD model because I read how bad the SSD was - tbh (having an eee with a SSD) i'm glad i did - lots of space and resume from hibernate is impressively fast (on XP or W7).

The downsides - they're a **** to dismantle - and you need to do that to replace/add memory (no easy acess flap on the bottom). The atheros wifi card is problematic - i'm replacing mine with an intel one asap. YMMV.

Dangel - funny you should say you have problems with the atheros wifi card - seems rock solid in mine. It's given great reception and stabile connectivity everywhere in the house - you sure it's not the router causing the problems?

    Used in conjunction with XP

There's lots of people with the problem (see the aspire one forums) but i'm coming to think it's driver related - the newer atheros drivers are utter cack!
Still, I will replace mine nonetheless - it's cheap and i like taking things to bits

Just got an extended battery for it - getting 7-8 hours of use out of it now
