    How Much To Charge

Ok, I have been asked to develop a website for an international golf organisation, a branch of a big company just beginning.

The site will prob be fairly small to start with but will expand in the future. The site will incorporate an interactive feature enabling the registered users to add content to the site.

But how much do you think I should charge? I really don't have a clue as I havn't really charged for doing sites previously.

    Thanks,

    Basher

Sounds like your bascially gonna be designing some sort of content managment system.

£2000 minimum, and increase the price as the features they require increase. Add another £2000 minimum for any B2b / e-commerce features.

Thats the minimum, the bigger the company the bigger your prices should be.

It depends entirely on the scope of the project. Sit down and write down EVERYTHING that will need doing for the site. EVERYTHING. Thought about hosting? Thought about support? Thought about testing? Thought about deployment? There are a lot of things that will take up your time, not just the development!

The most important thing to agree on with the client is whether they want it to be a fixed price project, or whether they are going to pay you on a hourly/daily basis. So either you work out a figure and that's what it will cost them, or you say you will work for a certain amount (my company charges between £40 and £60 per hour depending on the task). Some people will prefer the fixed cost, some prefer the variable one.

If it's a site designed by a professional creative designer (which you would also be charging for, or has that not been done yet?) containing a certain amount of backend functionality, I'd say a rough figure would be anything from £3000 up to maybe 6 or 7k, depending on the complexity of the site, functionality, design, hosting etc. etc.

How many pages will the site have? Calculating a cost per page is also a good way of doing things...

Oh, and Shad, I've never seen a more blatant pimping effort in my entire life, and I've been to New Orleans

surely you need to work out how long it will take you to do it and charge accordingly?, specification of the work and a project plan should help with that?

Well... guh, somebody's gotta pimp our software, our sales woman is on holiday for 2 weeks

What our software will save you in time spent on development of back-end and integration systems, is profit for you in the future

    Overall Cost depends primarily on:
How much graphic design is required
    The complexity of the backend
    Aftersales support

the latter is particually important, if you support is poor you're unlikely to get more work from them...I work very closely with clients to ensure that they get what they want initially and continue to get what they want 12 months later.

as to pay, if you're freelance 'bout £20-£30 an hour depending on your location. do a good job, learn and charge more next time....
