Being a fan of both Knoppix & FreeBSD I was excited to read about this on Slashdot.

There are also plans to develop a suite of programs to be used to create a personalized disk." If it offers a painless BSD install (the way Knoppix makes it easy to install Debian to a hard drive), this should be a popular project. Reader Cronopios links to a related effort called LiveBSD which "has heavily modified FreeSBIE's scripts to allow for apache mysql and many other programs to run."

Downloading FreeSBIE & Live BSD today. Will post results/opinion soon for those interested.

whats the difference between debian and freeBSD ?

FreeBSD is an exension of the original Unix development, whereas Linux was developed as a totally different project. It's primarily aimed at being available for as many platforms as poss, with the advantage of being able to run most Linux apps seemlessly.

I only started using it when confronted with so many flavours of linux & i'm still a total n00b. But it's a hobby.

downloaded (only took like 20 seconds), burnt it, rebooted into it, tried startx.

realised i'd have to mess with the Xconfig to get my mouse working.

realised it wasn't ACTUALLY worth it.

got back to hacking around with gentoo.

now running linux2.6.5, kde3.2, ............all compiled with hardcore cflags.

Do you run Gentoo as your main OS dgr?

One thing that annoys me about gentoo; if you emerge a complex package, I never know where to go for gentoo-specific documentation. Stuff like where gentoo unpacks things, where the config files are, that sort of thing. Am I missing something?

got my debian system up & running. \o/

now to work out how to get gstreamer (gst-player, rhythmbox) to use ALSA instead of the OSS emulation layer
