    Angry Dam Explorer.exe

    What is with windows explorer.exe

Every time I use the comp online and offline, after about 20min I get an error message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close"
"You know the error message where it asks you to send error Report"

When explorer dies, most of my icons in my task bar disappear?

Is there a way I can stop this from happening and why does it do this?

You lose the desktop because explorer.exe does the desktop as part of its functions. I am having lots of grief with explorer.exe at the moment; any news that may help I'll post for you. Good luck!

Whenever I get any problems like that I just find the Windows disc and format.

    www.astonshell.com

No matter how hard I try, about a week after a fresh install explorer.exe starts crashing. Astonshell costs money (after the trial) but I can't remember the last time it crashed on me. It does require a lot of tweaking but to any techie it's bliss!

Aston does not do file browsing - explorer.exe still does that, however when Aston is set up right, explorer only runs when need, rather than all the time, meaning less memory leaks and so on. Furthermore, if explorer does crash, only your file manager windows go - the taskbar remains.

edit: Another shell replacement called LiteStep springs to mind, but I don't like it personally.

As I side note I believe you lose explorer when another program takes memory that explorer wants as it expands - explorer is picky and arsy.

I aren't certain as this as a friend (albeit a programming one) told me this.

    Yes, you can.

Explorer is not an essential part in windows - there's just a registry key that makes it run at startup, so even if the uninstaller didn't work, you could run regedit and fix it yourself anyway.

Check the site out before you try it, that way you can decide if you want to install it or not.
