    WinXP CPU identification

I've just picked up two laptops (IBM Thinkpad T30's identical model numbers)

one came with Windows XP pre-installed from an IBM recovery CD the other came with nothing installed.

I installed XP on the "blank" one. The XP version is 2002 SP2 included.
Whe I booted the laptop for the first time I got the XP splash screen which said "Windows XP" - I noticed this was different to the other laptop which boots with the splash screen "Windows XP professional version" - I thought nothing of it as they are both XP profesional.

Now the confusing bit, well for me anyway.

if I right click on "my computer" on both the identical laptops I see the cpu being identified as

    "Inte(R) Pentium(R)4
    Mobile CPU 1.80GHz
    1.8 GHz"

    on laptop1

and on laptop 2 I see

    "Mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R)
    4 - M CPU 1.80GHz
    1.8GHz"

Now I know they are both the same make/model/laptop and according to the ibm website they are both Pentium-M's

    so my queries are

1.) Why does XP not show them as the same CPU ? do I need some sort of special driver/config/tweak to make XP show them both as mobile CPU's

2.) it may seem tirivial but is there any reason for the splash screens to be different, such as a different XP version in different builds ?

3.) Are there any tips to making the most of pentium-M's ?

    thanks

The one without "Professional" is Service Pack 2.

They aren't Pentium M's, they are mobile Pentium 4s.

and slow ones at that. 1.8ghz p-m is 50-75% faster than 1.8ghz p4-m, at a fraction of the heat/power/battery consumption

Aye, they will be P4-Ms, as P-Ms didn't exist at that speed at the time (or at all?). My (work) T40 only has a 1.5GHz P-M, and that's newer than your T30s.

thanks guys, bad phasings on the cpu's I knew they where not the centrion style chips, and I thought the correct term would have been the "mobile".

I'm surprised by directhex's comment that the genuine mobiles, as opposed to mobile CPU's are %50/%75 faster. They seem quick enough for the users having them, so no problems there. I'm still can't decide what laptop to get myself. (MSI S260 still calls to me)

    Thanks for the info guys.

pentium mobile is just as fast, if not slightly faster, than athlon64 clock-for-clock. consider how much faster a 2ghz athlon64 3200+ is than a 2ghz pentium 4, the same rules apply to p-m versus p4-m
