    I cant move these avi's?

I ahve numerous AVI's on my comp, and when I try to move them to another folder, it gives me an error message saying the file is in use? I also cant delete any of them for the same reason.

I believe this was some sort of windows glitch (Thats what I heard)

    How do I solve it?

BTW I am not running and file sharing progz.

    Thx

    Paul

It's probably explorer trying and play the avi in a preview screen. Can't remember exactly how to do it, try selecting more then one or is there an option for viewing as a web page? Disabling that might help...

Start -> Run -> cmd [enter]
    copy c:\folder1\film.avi c:\folder2\film.avi [enter]

    "del filename", would you believe

basic windows nt5 command prompt commands are "copy source destination", "move source destination", "del filename", "cd directory". you can use tab completion to complee filenames, so "cd c:\wi<tab>\res<tab>\th<tab>" will change the current folder to c:\windows\resources\themes. you go down a folder with "cd .." do to go from the default starting folder (C:\Documents and Settings\username) to the root of c, you type "cd ..\.." or "cd c:\". change drive letter by just doing letter: e.g. "g:". to execute things with their default app, just type their name. e.g. 'F:\MP3\Air\10 000 Hz Legend>"Air - Caramel Prisoner.mp3"' will play that mp3 with the default app.

that sums up the very basics.

everyone, and i mean EVERYONE should know some basic command promptery, it's handy for getting out of a jam.

oh yeah. * and ? are the wildcard operators - "copy c:\porn\*.avi c:\smut" will move all files of the chosen extension to that folder, "copy c:\stuff\app??.rar c:\junk" will copy everything starting with app, ending with .rar, and with 2 undisclosed characters in the middle

    Thanks Direct.

I did know it year ago, when I had my 166mmX but have since forgotten it. I had to backup my entire HD onto FLoppys using the COmmand Prompt!

How do these immovable, undeletable files come about btw?

you can't delete or move a file which is in use

and windows (well Media PLayer & its integrated bits into windows) will often mis-register a file as in use.

just getting rid of the explorer windows & doing it in dos usually convinces windows that things are definitely not in use.

Does it work if I do it in safe mode?

This is a major flaw, and I can see it really annoying me.

It's not really a major flaw, it's a bug which can rarely occur. I've seen crappy installs cause the issue quote often, once you've closed the videos they don't actually close, they're still in use by some process. I've never had the issue on my system currently. On an old box I had it, but I just simply went into command prompt and got rid of it.

Also, most probably yes to your statement. You should definitely be able to delete it once in safe mode.

most common cause I've seen of this is people downloading files via bit torrent - then trying to move then, forgetting that they are then seeding so the file IS in use - in use via bit torrent sharing the file out to others.

the ammount of times I've been asked about that.
    It is Inevitable.....

That'd be really obvious though. Mind you, most people have no concept of managing their programs whatsoever i.e. "I've got 1GB of memory, it can handle it!". And I can give a 10 stone person a piggy back ride, but it'd be easier if I had someone who was 2 stone
