Windows 7 64 Bit RC setup help

    Hi,

I've been running the Windows 7 32 Bit RC on my main computer without any problem for a couple of weeks now. I decided to try the 64 bit version in order to take full advantage of my 4 GB of RAM. When I installed the 32 bit version it took under an hour to copy the files, extract them and finish setting up. Installing the 64 bit version took several hours (I can't say how long as I went to bed). Now that it's all installed the operating system is painfully slow, it takes about 3-4 minutes to boot up, and doing anything at all is almost impossible. It takes about 30 seconds to get into "My Computer", for example.

I can't understand why the 32 bit version installed without a hitch and the 64 bit version has been such a disaster. My setup is as follows:

    CPU: Intel E6600
MB: Asus P5N 32 SLI SE Deluxe
RAM: 4 GB Corsair Value Select 667 MHz
Graphics: Sapphire ATI HD 4850 Toxic 512MB
    SSD: OCZ CORE Series 60GB
    HD: WD 250GB SATA

I am using the WD hard disk for data and I formatted the OCZ SSD to do a fresh install for the 64 bit Windows.

Everything seems to work, but just painfully slowly. I've been in the BIOS and haven't noticed anything odd.

I'd appreciate any guidance as to what the issue might be? I realize it is quite a vague problem "it's all really slow", but I feel that it's so slow something must just be wrong.

    Thanks in advance.

As a first step, it would be worthwhile unplugging any USB or networking hardware you have and seeing if it improves. Those two tend to be the first culprits of slowness for no apparent reason, ime.

I assume there's no excessive disk usage or stuff taking up all the CPU in task manager? You could also look in the new Resource Monitor to see if anything's hogging stuff there.

    OCZ CORE Series 60GB
That could be the problem, as the 1st gen SSD from OCZ were terrible.

Try moving or disabling Swap on the SSD.

But as others have said, the first gen OCZ SSDs where terrible for micro stutters etc.

Re: Windows 7 64 Bit RC setup help

Thanks for the replies. I figured out that the issue was to do with "Memory Remap", and now that I've enabled it in the BIOS it's completely sorted out all my issues. I wish that it had been more apparent that I had to change this thing in going from 36 bit to 64 bit. Live and learn I suppose.

As for first generation SSDs, the one (OCZ Core 60GB) I have was an utter disaster in Windows XP, but in Windows 7 its been working like a charm.
