Shift calculates the active sheet only. Without the shift you are calculating the whole book everytime you press F9. It's more efficient to use shift

And if you're anything like me, you'll soon get fed up of waiting 15-20 minutes for the entire spreadsheet to update. I really should stop using all these fun tools they give me and instead write a damn database query.

If someone doesn't want a sheet to have changes saved, they mark it readonly.
Simple to 'correct' it: Tools - CellContents - untick AutoCalculate (took a bit of finding in Help) and F9 calculates.
For me it's ideal, as I want the day/date/months etc. calculated when I open up but I don't need to be asked to Save as, if the date has changed, I need 'today's' data.

In some ways I found Calc easier to use than Excel is, so it probably isn't a serious app.

It takes a split second as there's not a lot to do.

I've found that in Calc I can have it so that I edit the cell directly and hit Enter - job done. Calc is a lot slower than Excel: take about 12x as long to open and about the same factor (~1s) to Save; calculation is <1s so not an issue.

Interesting. Might try that out. If just to get rid of the prompts when I open a spreadsheet to check something and get prompted to save.
