XP stops showing jpegs on desktop?

Okay, so I have a week off, and I've been playing Divine Divinity a fair bit. I just finished a session, and quit, only to see my nice desktop picture has disappeared and I've just got the blue background.

I can select a bmp just like in w2k, but there's no active desktop setting (I guess it's always on in WXP?), and it won't display a jpg.

Tried rebooting, no dice.

Any ideas? Buggered registry? Dodgy game??

hum, okay, dunno what caused it but playing with the web content/active directory settings in TweakXP and Group Policy Editor has fixed it.

Question - can I make the login screen a classic theme somewhere in here??
