    I Need a host!!

    Hey,

I have a website and need a new host with more bandwidth. I have a max of about £10 per month to spend on it.

    The more bandwidth the better.
    Must be frontpage 2002 compatible.

Anyone know of / have any good hosts?

    Cheers

Damn... I thought this would be a Stargate:SG1 thread! The topic seriously reminded me of two episodes:

Series 2 - Episode 2 (In the line of duty) where Jolinar the Tok'ra blends with Captain Carter in an attempt to survive, demands for a new host every two minutes, gets attacked and dies saving Sam.

    and

Series 2 - Episode 18 (Serpent's Song) where Apophis begs the SGC to help him after he is brutally tortured by Sokar. He also demands a new host every 5 minutes... then dies. Though he doesn't actually die, because Sokar resurrects him, ready for Series 3 - Episode 8.

You can tell what I've been doing with my holiday so far, can't you?

Had an operation yesterday, so I'll be spending the rest of this week watching the SG1 team all day

Going back to the hosting thing, there's a chap on bit-tech that has just started his own hosting company with a damned good offer. http://www.4-s.co.uk/

    1GB webspace
    25GB monthly bandwidth
    PHP/Mysql/frontpage
    unlimited:
    # Email Aliases
    # Email Forwarding
    # Email Auto Responders
    # FTP Accounts
    # My SQL Databases

    # Additional 25GBs Bandwidth per month £5.00pa
    # Additional 1GB Storage £10pa

    blah blah blah... £25/year if you're a student, £35/year if you're not.

If I didn't already have a web-mania.com account (which is also damned good), I'd have snapped this right up.

    -edit

just had a look at the site silent ben recommended, and you get a free domain name with that one. That's also a rather spiffing offer.

Looks like a good deal .......... unless you need their "extra" services, like :-

    Streaming media £10/month
    MySQL (£75/year),
    Frontpage extensions £30/year

There are many other low-cost hosts (though not necessarily as low) that include things like this, so it all depends what people need. That account looks less attractive if MySQL is added on, though for people wanting to host a small site with no database needs, it looks pretty good.

But there are two other criteria to consider, in my view.

    - What will performance be like?
    - Will the company still be there in 6 months?

    Neither are easy to assess.

ive found them rather lacking on general uptime and customer service, think my website was down at least once a week, when i was with them.

I've had 100& uptime for the past three months I've been on them. £4.99 for all those features and I couldn't resist. Doesn't notice it, but ping it and it's quite slow 220 around there, hexus was done in 150 region.

I've always got customer service replies within an hour, haven't contacted them for help or since I got hosting, that was when I was wanting more info. before I parted with my five quid

You have to be careful with hosting of that price, basically the servers are jam packed with sites to make it cost effective, for example, even the cheapest server would cost you $700 a year, that means you would have to have 100 sites on that server JUST to break even.

Better off going with a low contention ratio host.

Quite, it's fine for my use but a big site (with loads of server side work) wouldn't cope. Tis like that offer in Bargains a few months back, an American host doing hosting for two years (i think) + free .com domain for 7 quid or something like that. That offer was running for some time..... packed!
