    Re: Cheapest Windows 7

Thing is, if MS were really this hardline then you would never see anyone selling them. They know they can't realistically stop it as they are the ones still making money at the start of the chain from selling the OEM copy in the first place.
Unless you are going to ask for some weird support arrangement with MS then I'm sure you will be fine.

It does seem odd if they've tightened the licence conditions, that they're so openly available on the open market from reputable vendors (i.e. Amazon).

In that case, you should buy the retail version, and then you will qualify for the update version of the next release.

You can be your own customer, and as you are not distributing the software you don't need to be a registered system builder. Though I am a registered system builder - it doesn't take long

Or you could take the view that Microsoft's restrictions on resale are illegal under EU law and re use your OEM license on another machine.
Don;t forget that just because the company selling you something has told you something that it is legally true.

    Re: Cheapest Windows 7

This is interesting. I bought a HP computer. Over time I have upgraded every aspect of it - including the motherboard. However when I installed the motherboard, windows would not boot from the inst. drive as the licence was attached to the original MB. So I borrowed a windows install disk of a friend, nothing illegal there as when you buy windows you are essentially buying a key for it, which I had on a sticker on the side of the original HP computer. When I installed windows 7, I installed it as Home Premium - 64bit (as was my previous installation) and I then expected to have to enter the activation key. However I noticed that the installation was in the name of Asus (MB is Asus respectively)(The original machine was in the name of HP) and I did not have to enter an activation key.
Can anybody explain this as I have changed every component in my PC, conflicting what "MrNeil" wrote.
....So I'm now thinking, could I have just installed Ulti addition and not have had to enter the activation key as well?

    Re: Cheapest Windows 7

I think it's a shame that Microsoft don't seem to offer cheap Windows 8 upgrades if you buy Windows 7 by itself. It's an option for people who buy new PCs, I wish they offered the same courtesy to builders.

Remember that if you buy an upgrade DVD you can use it for a clean install anyway and save some money!

EDIT: Oh, and there's no reason to buy ultimate over professional, the extras you get you will never use.

I did some research into this before I installed it on my PC. Basically, it's only for installation on new PCs, so if you're building your own PC you can install it on the new build and it's no problem (although sometimes you have to use the Microsoft Authentication thing on the phone to unlock the software - really easy). If you've already bought a PC and are looking to upgrade, you're not allowed to use OEM software then (but again, how will they know). Hope this helps

    Re: Cheapest Windows 7

Cheapest is usually Amazon. Though I've found Scan.co.uk to be pretty cheap as well.
