SP2 help - Hangs on Boot

Not for me but for someone else Nimrod, he's getting the No-Boot problem with SP2, he's even just done a format and xpSP1 -> SP2 and still the same problems.

And he's getting a tad annoyed:

John - XP SP2 Killed my PC !! says:
    fresh XP SP1 install

    applied SP2

    hangs on reboot
John - XP SP2 Killed my PC !! says:
    ****ING HELL
    Devilbod says:
    hmm
John - XP SP2 Killed my PC !! says:
    /BOOTSAFE /ANGERMODE /BEATIWTHHAMMER
I've done the Google and found nothing, so has he as well (from work) I wondered if any peeps here might be able to help?

It's a Shuttle type thing NForce with a ATI 9800 and an AMD. Ignore that it's his work PC (lmao) will add the spec in a sec (when he gets back to me)

    Cheers

[Edit Sorry I should have probably put this in the Help section]

    Cheers for posting Bod

    *hangs head in shame*

    Just a couple of points...
Its not on my shuttle, its my work PC.

    Spec:

    P4 2.8
    Intel D865PERL Mobo
    1gb Ram
    150gb Maxtor HDD (SATA)
    ATI Radeon 7500
    Realtek NIC (Onboard)
    LiteOn CDRW/DVD Combo (IDE)

    XP (with SP1) Installs fine.
I install SP2 (without manually putting any drivers on)
On reboot the machine hangs after loading AGP440.sys

    *sigh*

Needless to say I am reinstalling XP SP1 and not going to touch SP2 with a big stick for a while

I might try it via Automatic Update but only after having a go on a test bench...

...the real question is, should I attempt it on my Shuttle at home

Have you tried installing just SP2?, you don't need SP1 to install SP2.

Try using the onboard video as opposed to the Radeon assuming Intel mobo has onboard Gfx

    Theres no onboard gfx

And are you sure that SP2 is cumalitive (sp) ? I haven't been able to find an offical statement on the MS site stating that it was (or wasn't).

The other problem I have is that the XP CDs I have all come with SP1 integrated :/

    From readmesp.htm included with SP2:

    "Windows XP Service Pack 1
Because SP2 contains all previous updates for Windows XP, including those provided in Service Pack 1 (SP1), installing SP2 will give you all of those previous updates.

If SP1 is already installed on your computer, you should install SP2 without first removing SP1."

Did you try the resolution Devilbod pointed to on the MS site?
    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;324764

Were there any messages during the SP install, such as "the driver xxxx.sys was installed by a 3rd party, do you want Windows to replace this file?" or anything similar?

Bah, I will try to find a pure XP Pro CD.

I have tried the fix that stops the AGP440.sys but that made no difference.
My understanding was that once the driver name was listed in safe mode, the driver had been loaded ? In which case I am guessing it is something after AGP440.sys that is causing it

While installing SP2 I did not receive any warnings or prompts of any sort, other than at the end to reboot.

I think the major point (at least for me) is that WinXP SP1 Fully Updated, works like a charm. It is not until I install SP2 that I suffer from what would normally be hardware failure issues :/

aye not a bad idea, I really didn't want to have to go "on site" to roll out as my 45+ XP machines are spread over 20 locations across the south of England

I am hoping I can create an Emergency Restore Ghost Image based DVD or something

Just to add a small but fatal twist...

I took the SP2 install from work home on a CD.
Backed up my shuttle (ghost) and installed the SP from the CD.

It worked fine with no problems

So there is obviously a driver / hardware issue in there somewhere

My guess is CD or something to do with the IDE, you might want to check to see if the latest m/b dirvers are on there including the bios.

Although saying that having to go round and update every bios if that is the problem, you might want to pretend you never knew...
