Got a nice email from M$ today, ive got on the beta for the new command shell [what we currently know as cmd.exe]
From my few inital plays with it its MUCH better than what we currently have. Its like using a Linux Shell, but on windows. You can write your own command aliases, easily edit the registry from the command prompt etc etc. Tis very usefull
Tho the best thing for me is that I can now 'ls' from in windows
windows has had the Korn and C shells for a while, via SFU
is MSH significantly better?
i'd be interested to try it, assuming it runs on server 2003

I'd be impressed if it was innovation, but it sounds like MS are just trying to demonstrate to fans of powerful CLI's that they "can do it too!"
Still, it will be a welcome addition, I'm sure.

I would agree, but, a CLI is a CLI nowadays, Microsoft can't really make 'their' CLI better than Bourne or C or whatever, but i'm sure they can make one that is worse. You can't even make a CLI 'better' now, let alone make a CLI more 'innovative', unless you make it into a GUI, but then it's a GUI

before anyone says it, take an example from today: "go through /scratch, logging filenames of files more than 50 days told to /scratch/purged.log, deleting as you go along - EXCEPT for /scratch/jumpstart, leave that alone"
easy way to do that in a gui? possibly. easy way to do it in a gui such that it runs daily, at 4am, with no user interaction?
urgh. with the loss of avalon and winfs from longhorn, msh was one of the few features left to interest me.
but looking at the documentation... how complex have they made it? powerful, no doubts there, but it seems to want to be perl, all of .net, bash, cmd.exe, and a natural language interpreter, all at once.
to the casual observer, it seems _FAR_ overcomplex
