The problem is, it cannot be scheduled or managed in any way.
Complete manual job every time you want to do a backup.....the sucketh

WBADMIN is the shell command you want. I have it used with SUBST to create alternating fortnightly system images. As a basic tool its not a bad one. As I'm only imaging a small drive I've kept my old routines running as well, (and still do a differential data backup daily).
Are we talking about File History or actual image backups?

The image option is buried (bottom left corner) in the "File History" section of Windows 8/8.1.

wbadmin does a volume at a time, including state info if you give it the right flags. I haven't tried one (really should at some stage before I get too much stuff installed). But it should do bare metal recovery from the install environment. And i think it uses shadow vloumes, so you should be able to do individual file restores also, but with additional tools
Both are there in file history and I have found Microsoft full Image backups are very simple and VERY reliable compared to other backup software that you have to pay for to get bugs. I'v used mine multiple times and every time it restores EVERYTHING like it was when you backed it up no problems.
