Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I upgraded to windows 10 yesterday and i must say i am really enjoying it ,but i did have problems !!
Problem one was i could not update via the GXW windows 10 upgrade thingy so i just installed through a flash drive .Installation was smooth and was able to choose the settings i wanted which was mostly no !
Problem two was just finding my way a little and uninstall some apps . This was easier than what i read online about all this :)
Problem three was all my steam game that were loaded onto a second HDD was gone !! Solution was sorted after what was a very simply thing to do within the steam settings .
Problem four was no music or no sound in gameplay ! This was a bit tricky becuse for some reason the downloads i installed from the VIA site didnt work ??? Well thanks to iObit Driver booster it installed the right one and all works :)
Everything works ,all games work from all HHD's and im now getting the 60fps in GTA5 and Arma 3 is running even smoother than before !
I'm going to toy around some more over the next couple of weeks and think about doing a clean install but then i may have different problems ?

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
The motherboard utilities/drivers from ASUS were my main gripe as well - ended up having to clean install Windows to resolve the issue.
My mum's laptop (HP touch screen something or other) went from 8.1 to 10 and happily broke the LAN and Wifi drivers, downloaded them direct from Atheros but no joy. Tried the HP website but they only offer driver downloads through Windows Update for that model... Full factory reset to 8/8.1 and upgraded to 10 and got the network adapters working again.
So yes, once you disable all the privacy snooping (using the setup options and extra tools), got through driver Hell, removed some of the bloat (Candy Crush etc.) and fixed the DPI scaling (not sure if that's still an issue on more recent builds). Win 10 is very good.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I have indeed had the odd sound problem in Win 10, sound card disappeared in Control Panel but showed in Device Manager ??? So yes sound issues are a bit odd, other than that its been pretty solid.

other than that?
it's SOUND man... it's second most important to the screen working ;)
-
Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
Yes but I had sound problems in Win 7 & 8 so its a bit swings and roundabouts for me :)

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I had my first big gripe with Windows 10 last week (XINPUT driver in the latest cumulative update)....other than that, it's been a rock....even Realtek audio :)
Pretty much every issue I have seen or heard about so far, are driver related........unsurprisingly....although there does seem to be fewer of them this time around.

I'd put screen, keyboard, mouse & networking before sound to be honest.

Had the same issue with sound appearing and dissapearing.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I couldn't nail it down to anything in particular, sound card disappeared and the HDMI on the graphics card became the default, a couple of reboots later sound returned like nothing happened!

The more things change, the more they stay the same. I had sound card problems with the original Soundblaster and SB16, and AdLib Gold, back in the days of text-based DOS, and in Win3.x. They persisted in one form or another, though to a lesser extent, in WinXP, W95, W98 etc.
Ironically, I think Win7 is about the one Windows iteration that hasn't given me sound problems ... other than once or twice when trying to get very old games running caused some head scratching and the odd uttered expletive.

True. Vista got a lot of flack for rewriting the audio stack but really the ire should have been directed at Creative. Amazing how cheap motherboard audio worked fine but Creative products could only be fixed by buying a newer model.
I seem to recall someone tricking Creatives new drivers to work on the old hardware & having lawyers waved at him.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
Ah yes I remember DOS well, fiddling around far too many jumpers on the soundcard, especially when the sound card also controlled the CD-ROM drive. Still remember what I put in the autoexec.bat file :-
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T3

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I've upgraded to Win10, did a in place upgrade, Having alot of sound issues, Uninstalled the Drivers & installed the latest ones from the RealTek website, still same issue. In Control panel its showing HDMI with a red cross, I guess this is to do with the Graphic card. tried to install the old ones and the PC hangs. Jonj1611 - ahh yes the CreativeLabs AWE 64 GOLD One of the best sound cards ever. Overall I dislike the win10 Graphic styling and the annoying Fonts. Also when playing Battlefield you ALT+TAB out of the game and the Browser changes it's dam size when you dont want it too, happens with Edge & Chrome. All the Icons are meh.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
So would you say updating from windows7 to windows10 is worth?
-
Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I still like it :)
Im now thinking about re-installing a fresh Windows 10 but at the moment everything is still okay !
I am going to toy around more not only because i really need to but because it seem to be crying out "tinker with me " . Maybe it's Cortana ;)
Honestly i have not had one problem now since ironing out the problems i stated earlier on . Maybe the real test is when i do a fresh install ?
I say go for it if you haven't got much to loose with loosing data and programs .

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I've been having a pretty good time with Windows 10 actually. But there are a couple of things that are really beginning to irritate me.
Every now and then I get asked how likely I am to recommend Windows 10 to others. I wish it would take a hint and sod off with that.
Even worse... I opened up Calc and before it finished loading the app it asked me how I rate it... the calculator... the one that's been part of Windows forever... that's just a calculator. I was half expecting it to say "Leave a review to unlock 20 free calculations!"
Finally, I usually press the Windows key and type in what I am looking for. It really aggravates me that it will often find folder names (or even worse, web based results) before it finds actual installed apps, an index of data that is probably considerably more static and reliable than either folder, files or web based stuff...

It's odd I haven't experienced any of that (yet), the Windows store has been pretty inobtrusive and I have the calculator open most of the time, and I also access apps the same way as you and it's been very good at finding apps first.
Might be some toggles in the settings somewhere that can resolve these.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I believe that when you first install Windows 10 it asks you about feedback etc, might be related to this? I have never received any pop-ups asking me to rate applications or recommend Windows to a friend, and I have been on Windows 10 for a good few months now with usage probably every day. However, on first installation I basically opted out of all the "customer enhancement" options etc.
Have a look at this page and see if changing some of the options make a difference - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/w...cs-privacy-faq
I've found Windows 10 to be fairly good. Everything seems stable. Haven't had any issues or crashes. It did take a bit more time to customise than Windows 7 though - I spent a while fiddling with the menu to remove all the tiles in the right hand side, as well as change the task bar setup etc.
-
Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
Well that's promising, I'll have to have a proper look at the settings thanks. I can't recall being asking to opt in/out of anything when I upgraded Windows 7 a while back.
-
Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
It has something to do when you installed W10 !
I don't get those pop ups :)

That might be the problem, I certainly got several pages of opt-outs for all kinds of stuff when I upgraded, which I suspect they had to put in from negative feedback. you must have upgraded prior to those options being put in to the upgrade process.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
4 weeks ago i installed Windows 10 and i did get a whole lot of option to adjust ! But it did other me the option to do so :)

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
Running Windows 10 right from the release date. Had no major problems at all apart from some sound card driver compatibility which was fixed within a month after release. Absolutely love it by now.
-
Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I,ve now upgraded 6 machines (mine & friends) and have to say had no problems. To be honest all had windows 7 and are fairly new machines (under 3 yrs old) so maybe that helped ?
Have to say prefer win 7 but eventually will get use to win 10 as win 7 will be phased out in time.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
Just make it look like windows 7 :)

is everyone aware of windows 10 snooping via telemetrics? Quite a big concern for people before upgrading to Windows 10 and for good reason.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
Yes its been mentioned before.
-
Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I really like Windows 10 but it does have some issues.
I updated on the same day it was released and while I liked the OS itself I had lots of issues resulting in me having to restart multiple times a day.
My explorer.exe kept freezing and restarting did not fix.
Did a clean install of windows 10 from a usb though and it has been great since, I have had similar issues with drivers like a lot of people and sound problems but fresh installs of the win 7 (no win 8 available) drivers available worked for the most part.
I do know though that it is not everyones cup of tea, I upgraded my Dads PC and he hated it, so it is a good thing there is an option to reset.
I would still recommend it though, but I would say do a fresh install rather than an upgrade as I know I am not the only one who has had issues that way.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I would very much like to upgrade to Win 10 from 8.1 for the sake of change alone but the privacy concerns and the artificial limits of DX12 and what not is not a business model I am to willingly going to subscribe to
-
Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
Did the Windows 10 upgrade from 8.1 at the weekend.
What I have found is that some programs load as fast as they did on 8.1 but sometimes others take a while to start. Anyone else found this?
BTW I did the upgrade rather than a fresh install so maybe this could be a reason why?

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I have found things as quick or quicker.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
the one thing I'm wondering about is the free upgrade license itself.
mums computer is running win 7 fine and dandy, she quite likes it and objects to change. I put chrome on, but she doesn't use it, uses internet explorer because its got internet in the name, that's what you go on the internet with. old people logic :p
so, say I upgrade to win 10 and get the free upgrade license, which will assign a key to the machine, so can reinstall and auto-activate win 10 as many times as I like. then she doesn't like win 10, so use the inbuilt 'rollback to win 7' option.
will the win 10 key still be assigned at the reg-server end? so if my mum changes her mind again later in the year after the free upgrade ends, I could just put a fresh Win 10 on and it will still auto-activate?
I'm guessing its a case of 'wait and see'. just wondering if anyone else has the same conundrum.
-
Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I believe so yes. I don't see how it's any different from performing a clean install of windows 10 after the offer period. I think the rollback period is more about ease of rollback due to still having old windows files lying around rather than a license issue.
-
Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I still have Windows 8.1 and I'm not planning on upgrading to Windows 10 in the near future. I don't know if it's worth it. Plus, I'm not having any problems with my Win 8.1 now so why upgrade?

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
Is there an easy way to refuse the upgrade. Last night I got a dialog say Upgrade tonight or any of the next 5 days.....
I don't want this issue at all.
-
Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I upgraded my wife's W7 installation to W10 on her laptop via USB. It was a straightforward process and went well. Only gripe is her headphones aren't recognised when they are plugged in, so she has to go into the sound settings to change between speakers and them.
Upgraded my own W8.1 PC and after fiddling to get it how i like it seems very familiar. No complaints so far.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I now have three computers with Windows 10 all running fine :) One is PRO version which I just done the other night , i only to come across a problem regarding the Realtek Ethernet Lan connection .
It just didn't work ! I did everything possible to try to fix it . In the end i thought i try a usb wireless adapter and came across the same problem ! Again I did everything possible checking and re-checking , googling and drinking lots of coffee . There i was begining to think it was down to the windows 10 install X2 when at 6:21 AM it worked ! It just found the connection for online and i was able to update :)
Something to do with the router maybe but a almost 8 hour windows install was my longest for one bloody problem .
Damn my determination to resolve and complete things !!!!

Re: Windows 10 upgrade ! I love it :)
I did use a windows10 machine recently, and it was OK.
But I'm quite happy with Win 7 on a VM for my legacy applications (two of them) so I have absolutely no reason at all to change.
