KDE says "Could not read file /mnt/backup/[whatever]"

Gnome says "Error "I/O error" while copying "/mnt/backup/[whatever]""
"Well, there was your Uncle Tiberius who died wrapped in cabbage leaves but we assumed that was a freak accident."

    just humour me.

lets remove the window manager from the problem

open an xterm and do cp -Rp /mnt/backup/* /$destination

    see what error you get

if you get an error on a file run

    file $filename on it
    It is Inevitable.....

Plenty of stuff came up - no idea what it all means!

The error messages all seem very similar - here's an example:

smb_proc_readX_data: offset is larger than SMB_READX_MAX_PAD or negative!
    smb_prov_readX_data: -59 > 64 | | -59 < 0
    smb_add_request: request [caa84e80, mid=57748] timed out!
    cp:reading 'mnt/backup/Programs/Quicktime/QuicktimeInstaller(1).exe': Input/output error

If it's any help, it always seems to be a .exe or .dir file.

Edit: I did file on one of the failed files, and it came up with: MS-DOS executable (EXE), OS/2 or MS Windows.

hmmm this is more like it.

the fact that file knows what type of file it is, suggests it can read it and knows whats going on with it.

Looking at the samba mailing lists this appears to happen a bit with debian packages
I found this http://davenport.sourceforge.net/ntlm.html quite interesting to do with windows filelocking security that sometimes causes a problem with the debian package

this guy appears to be having the same problem

I don't know much about whats going on at the moment, let me have a little dig and play

    I'm on it though...

At the moment, I'm trying to network Debian and Windows, and so far I can access my Debian PC from Windows. So:

    1. How can I access Windows from my Debian PC?

    2. I know I can't write onto my Windows PC from Debian (due to NTFS being used), but can my Windows PC write onto my Debian hard drive?

    Thanks

first, are you sure the samba libraries are installed?.. smbfs module depends on them.

Well, I did apt-get install samba smbfs swat - I think that's it.

looks about right *sigh* really though i don't have enough experience/patiences with package managers, i just build the sources myself, i'm willing to give Gentoo a bash and see if portage lives up to my expectations, i rarely have problems with my own compiled software. Unlike RPM's which have been a nightmare for me in the past

*edit* I don't like Gentoo, honest!.. Packaged binaries > Port sources anyday.. aghm

aidanjt, you might want to edit your post. You can't admit to liking Gentoo around here! The Debian junkies are watching.
