    Bandwidth and Forums

    Howdy peoples,

Yes it's annoying me again with that site about that band.

Well the launch went pretty well, got people onto it and the forum has taken off nicely even if it is just people in school and the local area - or so I thought.

The account has a limit of 10gb of bandwidth a month so roughly about 2.5 gb a week. It's the 7th of the month and the damn thing has used over 1.5gb of bandwidth in just over a week in its first week.

The viewtopic.php file has taken over 500mb of bandwidth itself! (Probably those word association threads )

Does anyone have any advice on how to combat the effects of forums on bandwidth? I'm using phpBB 2.0.6 at the moment.

I'm surprised at a forum taking up so much bandwidth.

I'd be very interested in hearing if this is a common problem

Very common....I have a phpbb forum with about 120 people posting or viewing and I use about 1.8gb a week. Its the whole PHP thing. I try to keep the graphics on the forum to a minimum

Images are your killer. Do you a custom skin/graphics for board? Check those kinda things.

Also go to http://www.phpbb.com/ and look up bandwidth saving mods and adjustments. They are really help

120 people.....1.8gb a week. Thats just crazy. I'd always have thought it would be quite/very low bandwidth

I'd be interested in hearing how a vbuliten board compares

Hmmm, well I just checked, one of the forums I host has 11,151 members with an average of 100 posts per day and its used up 13GB of bandwidth since the start of the month. Thats running PHPbb 2.0.13.

If you wanted hooking up with more bandwidth I can offer you hosting, got loads of space and oodles of bandwidth, but it depends what you pay now.

put it this way, I have a VERY small scale server compared with HEXUS, and I still get 1,500GB to use up a month.... no where near enough for hexus

Really hits home why coding should be efficient when you start getting big hits to your site.

Question - what does gzip do exactly? If have got that option somewhere.

2.5 gig 8 days into the month. Thats a stunning ammount, utter madness

Thats certainly not my impression of what the stats of a forum would come in at

    do you allow attachments ?

I'd imagine that to be a killer ?

    png's instead of jpgs ?

do you host any other content apart from the forum itself ?

    "and a seperate uploader."

Only about 20 members use it regularly though and the majority is small images used in posts or for avatars.

Edit: oh there's a games addon with a load of Flash games. Forgot about that.
