depends what you want to do, we use Pro/DESKTOP in school for technical modelling - its basic but powerful(dont know if its still available). Apparently cinema 4d is good too, more powerful and flexible, but i havent used it.
Well to make models of stiff like mp3 players, cameras etc..
You can get many free 3d rendering programs.

Get Blender.
Agreed, it had no understanding of 3d environment at all, it simply translated 2d shapes into 3d and got in a huff when, for example, 2 shapes overlapped.Originally Posted by skuzgib
Thats interesting, i've been using ProDesktop
Whats the best alternative?
You can get a copy of Maya free for educational purposes, albeit with watermarks. Softimage also do a free version. If you need full renders though try Blender.
I use Pro/Desktop and find it good once you get the hang of it. It isn't very intuitive although easy to use once you get the hang of how it should be used (follow they're offical tutorials).
G4 PowerMac - Tiger 10.4 - 512MB RAM
MacBook - 2Ghz - 1GB RAM - 120GB HDD
Rotel RC970BX | DBX DriveRack |2x Rotel RB850
B&W DM640i | Velodyne 1512
I use Sketchup
3DS Max is good for rendering and Blender I've heard is good aswell.
For more engineering techinical side of stuff SolidWorks is easy to use and very good. PRO/Desktop I really do not like, we have it at school and I just find it makes no sense- if cost an issue then Pro/E would me much better but quite difficult to use.
I would recommend SolidWorks.
You've got to have a dream, if you don't have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true?
Blender is a brilliant app. I started using it 5 years ago while at college and loved it. Unorthodox control system, but works really well once you get practiced with it.
I thought the project died a couple of years ago? Glad to see it's still alive and well!
