    Converting avi to mpg

My father in law has sent me a disc with loads of videos of my kids. For some reason these are in .avi format. I want to play these on my DVD player, which cant read avi but can read mpeg, so how do I convert them from avi to mpg?

I've tried opening them in media player and saving as .mpg but all that lets me do is change the extension on the end of the file name, not actually save as an mpg.

    Any ideas?

    Elneckio... cheers for that link.

My god does mpeg get big or what? I'll need a damn DVD burner at this rate!!!

Even a lowest res and spec I'm looking at some HOOOOOOGE files!

I reckon it might be better to look at a shuttle for a media center type system...

load Nero, start a new VCD

drag any old files (i.e. AVIs) into the new disk, it'll convert them to MPG

Agent, yep, you do, as it asks for it if I try that.

Sparrow, my DVD player is about 5 months old, its a Philips jobby that plays eveything else, perhaps I'm just recodring the disc wrong?

And Volcano, nope, aint got the wonga... not with two kids and Christmas looming!

Heh, mpeg encoding was my excuse for buying a faster 2nd PC

Some mpeg4's can be as much as 1/10th the size of mpeg2 they have been ripped from - obviously with noticeable degradation at those compression rates though and jumpy if things are moving fast on screen.
