    Question Knoppix Display Issue

Can anyone help, running the latest live cd on a Dell Optiplex GX150, I get the main screen, put knoppix screen=1024x768

it boots, but when it gets to the point of changing screens, i get a bad picture (like an untuned tv) & then my TFT reverts back to DVI with my main pc.

It gives me the option of selecting rows & columns, but I havent got it to work yet.

Can anyone help me get either 1280x1024 or 1024x768 @ 60hx displayed

    Thanks

Ive had a look & apparently quite a few people have the same issue with Dell PCs & the onboard video controller, but no solution as to how to fix it.

Hmm - interesting - I wonder if the Dell uses a customised graphics card. The Knoppix 'cheat codes' - basic start up options - offers many options for peripheral parameters (don't say that after a few pints!) at boot time, but it is worrying that several people have reported the same problem without a solution. One option would be to buy a cheap common graphics card and try that, but seems a bit OTT. Careful trawling of the cheat codes may offer the solution, or a browse of one of the Knoppix books (Have a look in the computer section at Waterstones) Sorry I can't help - I've found Knoppix to be pretty forgiving, I've run it on laptops and desktops, but the desktops have been home grown with pretty standard parts.

Thanks Peterb, ive checked & it seems i need to source a low profile gfx card for it, ive tried installing Suse 9.3 Pro & have exactly the same problems.

This is going to be used as my 24x7 web box, Its been suggested that Ubuntu will work, will just have to see.

One thing - with a hard disk install (not Knoppix) I have sometimes had to edit the X11 config files to get a picture. This was a problem with both a Red Hat and Fedora Core installation. On the RH system the installation ran OK, but after the reboot, as soon as the X server started, the monitor shutdown. The solution was to srat up in command line mode, log on and then change the X11 cionfig file. The same problem happened with a TFT in FC3. Again changing the file to the basic monitor spot allowed the system to restart and then I could use the gui tools to set it up as I wanted.

I'm not sure how yopu would do that in Knoppix - I haven't examined the boot up options at all (I use it as a recovery system 'just-in-case' and for editing those pesky persistant hidden windows files) but it may be possible to boot knoppix in command line mode, edit the x config file, start the X server, then save the environment on a persistant partition (usually a USB flash drive) but you will need to do a bit of research to find out the details. It's when things go wrong that you really start learning how they work!
