    Data recovery apps...

...OK, so our HR Director's lappie hard drive has just squealed and died (well, I have a corrupt partition anyways) and I really need to get data off it ASAP. I'm trying to recover the partition using Winternals Disk Commander - Acronis ain't picking anything up though. Anyone got any quick and dirty apps they'd like to recommend?

winternals is the only one that springs to mind.

have you given the freezer trick a go ?

have you a good backup stragey ( or an up to date CV? )

Heh - cheers Moby... I suggested the freezer trick and nobody believed me!

In terms of backup - we backup the servers, which in theory hold all individual userwork however this guy has a whole load stored on his local drive. On the plus side it may well get me a budget with which to get some decent specced servers for backup capacity etc...

As for CV I've only just started here, and he's already admitted that it's his own fault for storing stuff locally - he's a nice guy like that

thats lucky - You might want to look at some workstation backup solutions for people hwo are likly to store docuemtns locally - or possibly set up some offline folders that he can sync ?

yeah - problem with that solution is that he'd just end up storing the data elsewhere as it would take too long to synch... I think he's learnt the hard way now though. I hope.

Anyways, scanning now with a Winternals Admin Pak that I handily got sent through the post this morning from some thoughtful sales rep. Makes a change from AOL cds...

so in light of the fact that I managed to recover most and now it would appear that data storage and backup have been deemed important enough to splash some cash on does anyone want to recommend a workstation backup solution? Preferably something that will silently back data up when users are connected to the network to a NAS or something similar - the less user interaction required the better!

Also - incrementals are pretty much a must...

ooh they do open file backup too - that's pretty sweet. I'm currently investigating Acronis True Image Corporate Desktop, which may well fit the bill, dependent on what deal we can get no volume licensing.
