    GRR - xp file searches

whats the game with XP & the "search for files & folders" option?? its next to useless!!!

i've just been searching for files which i KNOW are there, i've switched on "search for hidden files" the whole lot, but it just won't find them, but if i manually look where they should be, there they are! getting a bit narked with XP to tell the truth, only been using it for 3 days

    /end rant

anyone else have any similar XP trouble & what can u do to get around it

Have you unticked the 'hide protected windows system files' one too?

Also some files in Windows folder will only let you find them if you are logged in as admin properly (even use with admin rights won't work - bizarre)

This is one of my personal gripes about XP, and is barely mentioned on the net.

Basically, it ignores certain files, no matter what. For a large part of my job I'm a Java developer, and I can tell you now that XP ALWAYS ignores searching java files. Especially if you use the "containing text" feature.

It's a total disgrace on the part of Microsoft.

The solution is to use Agent Ransack. It's free and superb.

It is basically a decent working version of the M$ search. It also allows you to use regular expressions in the search fields. I'd be lost without it.
